5 weeks pregnant bleeding

Hello,
I suppose I need a bit of support. I've been off work for my 3rd day today with bleeding. I have had IVF with fresh embryo and I'm 5 weeks 4 days pregnant... Or at least as far as I know I'm still pregnant.
I started bleeding on Monday. At first it was light flow, orange, then a flash of red then light pink. Since last night its a little heavier and darker. Not bright red blood though. I know it's possible to bleed/have periods when pregnant but I can't help fearing the worst. I have my first scan Dec 3rd when I will be just under 8 weeks. Nurse said that I could take a pregnancy test a week after bleeding stops. I intended to go back to work today but could not face it. I am in an awful limbo. I'm going to the GP later to see if a water infection has gone incase thats related. (took antibiotics). Your support would be appreciated.

So sorry you're going through this.

I've had 4 pregnancies.

First was natural conception and I had bleeding at 11 weeks. Baby born fine at 40 weeks.

Second was IUI and I had bleeding at 11 weeks and miscarries.

Third was IUI and I had bleeding at 6 weeks and miscarries.

Fourth was IVF and I had bleeding at 9/10/11 weeks. Baby born fine at 38 weeks.

So, in my case I bled in all 4 pregnancies and 2 went full term, the other two ended in Mc.

I think the statistics say roughly the same, that bleeding in pregnancy will in around 1/3 - 1/2nend in Mc.

It seems so much tougher when you have been through the rollercoaster of IVF to have a threatened Mc. It's just not fair.

Often the cause of bleeding in an SCH - a sac of blood in the uterus. I'm pretty sure you have a higher likelihood of this if you have had IVF.

Maybe try and book in for an early scan to help you stop worrying?

Hope you're as ok as possible

@brightonroc
Thanks for your reply. So sorry to hear of your tough times. I have tried to get an earlier scan an epu but they won't give me one as its too early to see.
I have to speak to my boss shortly and tell him why I'm still not coming in. Dreading it as he isn't particularly sympathetic and is only bothered about work statistics.
I will as at the doctors if anything else can be done to determine cause of bleeding.

Do you have a private scan service where you are? Usually they cost around £50-60.

Florencehill · 20/11/2019 09:09

@brightonroc. I'm not sure. I will ask the GP this morning. I don't think it would help though as I'm not far along enough to see anything like a heart beat.

GP said same thing as hospital - no point in a scan now as heartbeat can't be detected. Just trying to keep positive now and keep some hope, yet fearing the worst.

Didn't want to read and run but I had a scan Monday at 5+5 at there was a heartbeat, definitely worth exploring the private scan x

gonewiththerain · 20/11/2019 12:33

I’m really sorry you’re going through this. I had one pregnancy bleed and end in miscarriage at 5-6 weeks the bleeding escalated to cramps and floods very quickly
My second pregnancy I started bleeding it was pink, red, brown and I continued bleeding on and off until about week 8. It was something heamatoma and it was diagnosed by an early scan 6 weeks and they found the heartbeat, ds was born at 42 weeks.
A lot of women have bleeding during pregnancy.
Try and get a scan at epu or privately as soon as you can
Good luck

@gonewiththerain and @Hayley94 thanks for your replies. I have googled and there is a none medical sonography place that does not instil me with confidence. Looks more geared up for souvenirs / videos of babys face in 4D although it does 'viability scans' from 6 weeks. Not sure I want to traipse there for a non medical person to probe me. Bleeding is heavier and dark red today. Im losing hope. Tomorrow I will be 5weeks 5 days and might call the fertility centre tomorrow and beg them to try and find heartbeat since @Hayley94 found one.

It's a called sub chronic haematoma (SCH). If one is found at a scan, it's the likely cause of bleeding hence why a scan can help put your mind at ease. Hope you're doing ok OP

brightonroc · 20/11/2019 15:23

They will be medically trained OP but I get what you mean. A scan won't change any outcome - it just may help you relax.

It's also not nice having an internal scan if you have bleeding.

Hayley94 · 20/11/2019 16:12

@Florencehill just remember it is still early, so even if a heartbeat isn't found there's still time x

Hello supporters,
I think I have a conclusion to my story. Something just came out of me that I think is the yolk sac. It's translucent, spherical, squidgy and about the size of my little fingernail. I haven't attempted to look inside. It came out with a little dark red clotting. I've been trawling the Internet for similar images and came found some on forums. Feeling a bit numb as you do with bad news. So sad for my second little baby now that never was. Thank you for all your kind and helpful suggestions and comments. Please don't leave me just yet!

Hi Florence, sorry to hear your news and take some time to process. Do you need to confirm properly though? Stay at home or go to work, whatever will be best for you To take your mind off it. I’m also going through IVF and it’s a difficult time as so much emotional stuff is happening that you cannot tell anyone at work, at least I can’t. Did you have any frozen embryos? I am 2dp5dt FET atm after a failed first round, didn’t have the positive news you did but know the emotional rollercoaster you are on slightly

Lp1202 · 22/11/2019 11:21

Hi, did you go for your private scan? If yes what happened? I’m 6 weeks pregnant today and had bleeding this morning, went to hospital to be told there is nothing they can do As to early and got to go back to do another test on Monday because the test today shown as borderline? What is borderline?

Florencehill · 22/11/2019 18:57

@Jojo19834 yes IVF is a nerve-wracking and sometimes painful journey. I had fresh embryo transfer and have one one ice. I am sorry to hear your first round failed. Sending you my sincere best wishes for a positive outcome this time.

@Lp1202 and other supporters. Here is where I'm at now.
Its my 5th day bleeding and off work. Yesterday I called the A&E of my local women only (hospital where I also had IVF on NHS) They took my details and told me to come and wait and a doctor would examine me. To cut a long story short I was scanned and nothing showed up on ultrasound. I was diagnosed with PUL (pregnancy of unknown location! ) I had also passed a jelly tot like blob that they sent to the lab for analysis but the result could take 3 months to come back. So the scan showing nothing was no shock to me. I had a blood test to measure the pregnancy hormone level and this will be repeated tomorrow to see if its risen or declined. I strongly expect the latter.
Lp1202 what test did you have?
I wasn't expecting them to scan me so I am sorry you haven't been offered that. Do they mean that your level of pregnancy hormone is boarderline? I hope you get an answer soon and I'm rooting for you. Has your bleeding stopped?

I've been quite sad these past days wondering why I can't have a successful pregnancy. My body seems to expell it before 6 weeks. I wonder if me and my boyfriend are compatible. I've heard certain blood types clash... Im just searching for answers.

It was a pregnancy test, they want me to repeat on Monday as it was borderline. Was your test positive?

Lp1202 · 22/11/2019 19:16

Also I’m still bleeding with cramps, but it only seems to be when I go for a wee

Lp1202 · 22/11/2019 19:17

I’ve had IVF so I went back to the IVF clinic but I’m wondering if A&E would be able to do more and is it worth me trying A&E

Florencehill · 22/11/2019 21:28

@Lp1202 yes my preg test was positive. A&E may scan you... Worth a try

Thank you I will see!
I’m hoping the bleed is all okay and I still am pregnant! Maybe it’s worth trying a private scan company and seeing what they can do for me?

I’m going to do my own test again in the morning rather than waiting until Monday for them to do it again and then go from there tomorrow, try and get a scan booked maybe?

Fingers crossed I’m just hoping everything is okay but can’t understand why I will be bleeding? Feels like a period. But I would be 2 weeks late if tha was the case.

Thank you for your support!
