We are sorted if it's a girl but can't agree on a boy's name.

Nothing fancy or fashionable. Just a good, old fashioned, solid name that would stand him well if he turned out to be the next PM. (but not Gordon!)

Please bombard me with your suggestions

Hello Ceolas -

Have come on for inspiration!
Also have a very picky DH - I mention names and he just says no giving no reason!

I think if boy ours will be Euan but am (hormonally) worried that it's a bit hard for a little boy. DD always shortens/alters everyones names so will it end up being Euey?!

Girls names are all just horrible - Can't think of anything I like at all! There are names that are nice but not what I want to call my daughter!

Well at least I've got slightly longer to think - I'm only 38+6!

saltire · 20/08/2007 14:04

loler, no one has ever tried to shorten DSes name, or called him ewey, or ew or anything like that!

flack · 20/08/2007 14:18

Try this website for names. You fill in your preferences from the examples given and they suggest which names match your taste. The Classic Conservative list (although personally I can't imagine a PM named "Brian").

Hulababy · 20/08/2007 14:22

Oliver/Oli
William/Will
Charles/Charlie
Thomas/Tom
Harry
Jacob
Joshua/Josh
Samuel/Sam
James/ Jamie
Fred/Freddy
Edward

Hulababy · 20/08/2007 14:25

Ceolas - even if you chose a name that can't be shortened you can be sure that when older someone, or he himself, will find a nickname, a lengthened version, or something to call him.

We gave DD a name we didn't think would be shortened, yet it is shortened regularly by DD's friends and family too. Have done it myself without thinking! Not a version we write down, but a call out type nickname.

ProjectIcarus · 20/08/2007 14:25

John
Iain
Fraser.

I always think a boy needs a name with a good nickname/shortened version though.

ChasingSquirrels · 20/08/2007 14:32

mine didn't have a name for a week, in the end I just got so fed up of me saying "well we haven't decided yet" and ds1 saying "yes we have it is T" that I just said "well ok, he is T". Two friend have given birth since and neither of theirs were named for a week. It's more common that you think!

TheMuppetMuggle · 20/08/2007 14:35

We have on boys list (well on mine hehe)

Alexander
Henry
Charlie
Jacob
Connor

Ceolas · 20/08/2007 15:07

I did that test, flack, and surprisingly came out Classic Conservative

Peter?

I came out Classic Conservative too. Both dd & ds names are on the list!

KateF · 20/08/2007 15:19

My friend's ds is Peter George - classic and won't date. (Also suitable for future PM!)

loler · 22/08/2007 12:27

I'm now 39+1 searching the web for inspiration. DH from Isle of Man so was looking for a bit of a connection from there - found these (being name blind now and increasingly hormonal) - please tell me are they nice will they get teased at school (live in a very conservative (name wise) part of the country!

Brenna

Celtic girls name which means beauty with hair as dark as a raven

Quinn
Celtic boys name. Probably a variant fo the name Conn which in turn, means intelligent

MamaG · 22/08/2007 12:30

I think Christopher is a great name for a boy.

Very strong and whilst it is traditional it isn't old fashined.,

I know a Christopher vrey well and he doesn't recall struggling to spell it, just did it in bits!

would your DH like chris though?

Ceolas · 22/08/2007 22:51

Alas, MamaG, he is opposed to Chris

Thought I had persuaded him to Ruairidh last night (while we're on difficult spelling!) but he changed his mind at the last minute.
