When are you telling your work?

With DD (8 months) I had to tell work when I was 6 weeks as I was so sick.

I’m now 12 weeks and not planning on telling work until I have to. Either at 24 weeks or sooner if I’m showing. Reason being that I was pregnant when I came off maternity leave.

When will you ( or when did you) let work know?

Issue there is that work can’t give you protected time off for appointments etc, and can’t do a risk assessment for you if they don’t know.

First time I told work right after the first scan at 12 weeks
Second time maybe 14 weeks?
Depending on where you work, I think it's appreciated if you tell them early, so they can plan for covering your job when you go on mat leave.

I've told at about 16-18 weeks each time but I didn't show early and managed appointments in my own time. I've never told anybody before then though (apart from DH!) which might be unusual.

I'm the same I'm currently on maternity and will be 6 months pregnant when I return so told them at 20 weeks

I told work at 7 weeks because I wanted to have extra time off for appointments and some lee way for sickness etc. I haven't even told any family yet though, just my manager and my partner!

I told work at 8 weeks due to Hyperemesis. I was in hospital & didn’t have the energy to come up with a lie! Told my manager & immediate colleagues! I was signed off for 7 weeks, so needs must! My manager was actually a huge support - he has been so kind about the whole thing! Hurray for nice bosses!

First pregnancy, I told my work at 13 weeks, which was when it was confirmed. They were awesome.
Second pregnancy, I found out at 21 weeks, told them the next day and they sacked me.

Last time I told my manager at about 9 weeks. We were in the middle of forecasts and budgets for the next FY and I wanted him to know that I'd only be there for the first quarter. He asked my permission to tell his manager and HR, and they were the only people at work who knew until I shared my news at about 16 weeks.

I had regular risk assessments from HR, and time off for my appointments. Being protected for pregnancy related sickness was also a factor; I didn't take any time off sick but did feel pretty ropey until 13 weeks or so.

Thanks all.

I think it’s just because I came back pregnant that’s making me wary of telling them.

My role is also changing at around March time but I don’t know how that’s going to look or if I’ll be made redundant. Ill have worked there 2 years in January. I’ll be going on maternity leave in May. I only work 3 days a week.

I definitely don’t want to announce it until I’ve had the 20 week scan if I can help it.

Another lady at work recently announced hers at 20 ish weeks but we are the only two in our department to have fallen pregnant since the department was set up.

I informed my immediate line manager just after the 12 week scan as I needed a follow up appointment and needed the afternoon off. I then told a couple of other people and word soon spreads which makes my life easier.

I haven't officially told the management team though they will certainly know. I'll officially tell them when I get my Mat B

I told one female supervisor as soon as i knew at 4/5 weeks. i had 7 consecutive losses the year before and if it happened again while at work, i didnt want to have to explain, just leave, once my sickness kicked in i told my own male supervisor and hes been good as gold fortunately because it was horrific

mrssunshinexxx · 16/11/2019 10:07

Going to tell them around 12 week scan which I am hoping will fall before Xmas work party so I don't have to make up some bullshit excuse

I told my boss just before my 12w scan as I was offered a promotion with a lot of responsibility and wanted to be fair and straightforward with him. It helped that we have an excellent relationship and he has been nothing but 100% supportive and kept it a secret for as long as I wanted (yes, I still got my promotion and raise). I told everyone else at work around 20w.
