Sciatica - can the GP do anything?

Obviously I can (and perhaps should) seek advice from my GP but before I potentially waste their time does anyone know if there is anything the GP can do for sciatica?

I'm half way through week 29 and for the past couple of weeks have had incredibly painful (self diagnosed!) sciatica on walking.

I work in an office job and have no problems in the morning but come about 3pm I'm in quite some discomfort at my desk and in real pain when trying to walk around.

Other than referring me for physio or signing me off can anyone offer any advice from experience as to what the GP might be able to do? Has anyone been signed off for such a thing? Has physio helped anyone?

Thanks.

I've been referred for physio by the midwife at my 16 week appointment so no reason why the dr couldn't refer you? My appointment came through in a week too as you're higher priority when pregnant.

@janey15 - ooh I didn't know that you got a quicker referral when pregnant. That's good to know and makes it more worthwhile going as I know physio referrals can often take months!

Thank you for responding.
