Booking in appointment - share your experience

Hi everyone,

Had my booking in appointment today and found it quite an interesting experience. Was surprised by the amount of questions, particularly around finances, mental health etc. It is great they check all of these things now but made me feel a bit sad thinking how many people might answer 'yes' to some of those questions. Pregnancy is hard enough, must be even more so with additional concerns.

Anyway, how did everyone's booking in appointment go? My midwife was lovely and I found it a really nice experience.

Mine was pretty brief to be honest. I just had to give a urine and blood sample and was asked some questions about health, but certainly not about finances or anything like that. I was given a pack with information about screening tests and nutrition. I actually thought it would be more in depth than it was!

I had 3 in my first pregnancy. To be honest I found them all quite boring, especially by the time I was on to the 3rd. I wasn’t asked about finances, that’s a strange one! One of the midwives butchered the vein on my left arm and even 2 years later I still have to have blood taken from the right, that was about the extent of it really...

Never been asked about my finances! What on earth has that got to do with the NHS/midwife?!

I was asked my medical history, immediate family medical history, smoking, drinking, this time about my previous pregnancy & birth.. tiny bit about my mental health (literally, have I ever been diagnosed with any MH issues/medication)..

Urine test, blood test, given my Bounty Pack, 12 week scan booked & that was about it. My midwife is very nice, I’ve seen her twice now & she’s been very friendly! Second pregnancy you have a huge gap between 16 week appointment & then 28 weeks! So ages until I see her again now!

I’ve had 2 this pregnancy. First was AWFUL. Midwife refused to refer me to a consultant before 34 weeks despite the death of dd1 earlier this year and being now pregnant with twins. I changed hospitals and had a lovely appt last weekend. Same questions you had, but I felt supported and understood unlike the first appointment!

Bit strange that you have been asked about finances.. I've never heard that before and I'm.on baby number 3!
For me its usual... blood pressure, urine sample dipped, medical history/previous births/mc partners medical history (to an extent) weight/height took that was about it x
