Hi so I saw my midwife last night for the first time. She has estimated I am about 11 weeks pregnant based on when I last had a period. However I am more or less 100% certain I am only about 7 weeks. Because she ha and she needs to go by last period date she has booked my 12 week scan for next wednesday when in fact I will probably only be about 7.5 or 8 weeks pregnant. Will the ultrasound still be able to be done ? Will the sonographer automatically assume something is wrong as more than likely not going to measure anywhere near 12 weeks yet. Will they even be able to find a heart beat at 7 and a half or 8 weeks ?

I had an ultra sound when I was 6 +2 weeks and saw a heartbeat via internal scan they will probably book you in for a second scan to determine your date

I was given a scan at 7 weeks as I didn't know how far I was. There was a heartbeat and she couldn't give me a due date or tell me exactly how far pregnant I was. Just that she estimated around 7 weeks and booked another 12 week scan.

So they should still be able to see you baby's heart beat and they'll just book you another scan for when you'll be 12 weeks.

Would you say mention it to the sonographer and see if they will do an internal scan instead or wait and see are they likely to do an internal if they measure baby at 7 weeks instead of 12 x

The number of weeks dates from the last period so for example if you know you conceived 4 weeks ago, you're probably 6 weeks pregnant in hospital terms (because most people ovulate approx 10 days to 2 weeks after start of previous period ) - does that help?

mummy1214 · 05/11/2019 15:58

Hiya yeah thank you that's what I meant sorry I should have said I was basing it on how hospitals date. I am more or less certain I conceived about 5 weeks ago so would be about 7 weeks with how hospitals date it. But midwife said she had to go from my last period date which was August even though I am positive I'm not that far along.

It's fine to go for the scan, but certainly mention to the sonographer that you think you may not be as far as 11/12 weeks. They will start with abdo scan & then discuss with you.
If you are only 7/8 they will be able to see that & rebook you appropriately.
It happens a lot , so don't worry. At least then you'll know.

So I was in the same situation from lmp I was 14 weeks. I still went for the scan told them I didn't think I was that far and I wasnt I was only 9 weeks.. they did the scan measured and then booked me in again for when I was around 12 weeks x

Thank you all I feel a little less worried now. I will mention it to the sonographer when I go on for the scan next week. X

They will always do an abdomen scan before an internal. At 7 weeks it is unlikely you'll need an internal. I've had ab scans at 5 1/2 weeks

mummy1214 · 05/11/2019 18:54

Thanks. The reason I think they wont see much on an abdominal scan is I am plus size and do have a belly.

Even plus size they can see a baby at that gestation abdominal. I'm plus size (just had baby 3 today) all my scans picked up a baby so don't worry

Congratulations @Mintypea5
