Silly question.... but can you have five guys milkshakes whilst pregnant? I know you can't have McDonald's as it's Mr Whippy but not sure about five guys!

You're mistaken as McDonalds is not on the nhs avoid list.

BuffaloCauliflower · 02/11/2019 13:56

I’ve not seen anything about avoiding any ice creams, where have you got that from?

MrsH497 · 02/11/2019 13:57

My friend told me to not have macdonalds milkshake or McFlurry but never been officially told anything.

dementedpixie · 02/11/2019 14:00

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/foods-to-avoid-pregnant/ says this about ice cream:
Soft ice creamsshould be fine to eat when you're pregnant, asthey are processedproducts made with pasteurised milk and eggs, soany risk of salmonella food poisoning has been eliminated

For homemade ice cream, use a pasteurised egg substitute or follow an egg-free recipe.

nikdan123 · 02/11/2019 14:48

I have had loads of mcflurries Grin

Celebelly · 02/11/2019 14:51

McDonalds actually have incredibly high hygiene standards and protocols. The 'advice' about avoiding McFlurries etc. is to do with dubious hygiene. But that's unlikely in a reputable food chain where you're otherwise happy eating.

00100001 · 02/11/2019 14:53

Who told you that you can't have McDonald's ice-cream?? Confused

Was it a Burger King share holder? Grin

Lunafortheloveogod · 02/11/2019 15:02

McDonald’s icecream is fine.. I could see fancy home made soft icecream type things from farm shops maybe being off menu.. but the machines in McDonald’s themselves do a heat treatment cycle every day to keep the nasties down.

And adding anecdotal evidence.. had both milkshakes n McFlurry’s n ds has survived. They helped the heart burn and constipation.

Amanduh · 02/11/2019 16:44

You absolutely can have mcdonalds ice cream lol. And Mr Whippy, unless you’re very worried about hygiene..

welshweasel · 02/11/2019 16:46

Please read the Nhs website - there is very little that you actually have to avoid whilst pregnant. I was told off for eating sushi, smoked salmon, runny eggs, stilton, baked Camembert and various other things all of which are fine to eat!!

UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 02/11/2019 16:47

McDonald’s chocolate milk shakes were my only craving when I was pregnant with my DD. I must have had one every two weeks or so. Weird, because I don’t even usually like ice cream! My doctor said, “great, get as many sources of calcium as possible” 😝

Pinkblueberry · 02/11/2019 16:49

What?? Why can’t you have a milkshake at McDonalds? Confused

saywhatwhatnow · 02/11/2019 16:52

You can definitely have maccyds shakes, their hygiene regs are strict and the machines will be cleaned out regularly. I had A LOT in my first pregnancy. I would avoid mr whippys from an ice cream van as you don't know how good they are at cleaning out their machines.

Raindancer411 · 02/11/2019 16:57

I remember when I was pregnant in 2012 I was told to not have their milkshakes and ask others have said it's to do with cleaning and salmonella. I will not hold back this time is they are ok then

ChikiTIKI · 02/11/2019 16:58

I have been told to avoid ice cream that comes out of a nozzle too. I also check when getting scoops to see if the scoops are sitting in murky water. It's because there is ice cream in the nozzle which sits there getting warm. I wouldn't have thought about it going in to a McDonald's milkshake actually but would avoid a Mr whippy from an ice cream van, especially on a hot day.

nataliemum25 · 02/11/2019 23:09

Oh I'm always having McDonald's chocolate milkshake it's a craving right now for me

GrumpyHoonMain · 02/11/2019 23:15

You need to use your common sense. Nozzle ice-creams at MacDonalds have a higher turnover and are far more likely to be cleaned properly than and ice cream van.

ELM8 · 02/11/2019 23:19

The amount of McFlurrys I had in my first trimester was obscene.. I'm pretty sure they are fine, and the same for milkshakes.

Nc77 · 02/11/2019 23:52

I was told I could eat what I wanted but just to have a good food hygiene, I.e food that was thoroughly cooked so I could avoid any potential food poisoning episodes. A woman at my work just to critise me all the time on things I ate, I just think about it like back in the olden days people ate whatever they wanted, some people drink and smoke throughout pregnancy and these days people take worse things when they are pregnant so I think a drop of ice cream isn’t going to cause any harm.

tacosplease · 03/11/2019 04:22

I had some ice cream in a restaurant the other day - hope it was ok! Confused

DontCallMeDaisy · 03/11/2019 06:23

My midwife told me the same just last week - no Mr Whippy, McFlurry or McDonald's milkshake.

Reading all the answers with great interest... Could murder a vanilla milkshake right now

dementedpixie · 03/11/2019 08:18

Your midwife is wrong. Why not ask her to show you where it says you need to avoid them

VapeVamp12 · 03/11/2019 08:42

I’m getting a McDonald’s milkshake today after reading this thread!

Not ever heard of avoiding them so it isn’t my first this pregnancy

Moonstone12 · 03/11/2019 10:45

Now i want a McFlurry! And I don't normally eat ice cream.... off to McDonald's for lunch it is!

AppleKatie · 03/11/2019 10:50

It used to be the advice to avoid them but that was changed several years ago now.
