MASSIVE BLOOD LOSS @ 13 Weeks Pregnant...PLEASE HELP

RoseQuartz · 17/08/2007 14:09

Have had massive blood loss 4 days ago at 13 weeks pregnant, had a scan and baby is alive and seems to be well.
The blood loss slowed down to something like a heavy period after the initial massive loss, and am now either spotting, losng a bit more like a period again, or it stops temporarily before resuming again.
Am absolutely petrified as lost a baby due to miscarriage at 6 weeks last August.
Can anybody tell me what might have caused this bleeding and what the outcome is likely to be.
Also is there anything i can do to prevent further damage?
Thanks

it depends. are you getting any cramps/backache?
have you spoken to epu?

RoseQuartz · 20/08/2007 10:53

Currently waiting for mw to arrive, so will just have to wait and see what she has to say on the matter.

No, I'm glad to say I have no cramps/pains whatsoever, but then again, I didn't when I miscarried last year either, so I guess that doesn't mean much im my case really.

This waiting game is so awful isn't it- just not knowing what's gonna happen next.

Anyway, thanks for all who've given your advice, I shall keep you informed as to what mw has to say.

take care you lot x

Hi all,
thanks for your support.

Just thought i'd let you know - been to midwife this afternoon and she couldn't find baba's heartbeat....so have to go in to gynae ward on friday to see what they can do there, scan etc.

I know this sounds crazy though, but I was convinced that I HAD heard the heartbeat.
At first there was only the 'whooshing' sounds and she said that was the after birth, but as she moved and had one hand on me and the other writing something down, I heard what I can only think was a fetal heartbeat as its exactly what I usually heard with the other 6 babies.

Anyway, on the way home, I popped to the chemists and bought a pack of clear blue digital and also a pack of the clear blue non-digital ones, so I could see how strong the 'postive' line was going to be.

The digital one had 'pregnant' in the windown in only a few seconds. And the ordinary clear blue had a very strong line (as you'd expect it to be at almost 15 weeks pregnant) so to be honest I feel that my little un is still alive and well.

What do you reckon, ok the heartbeat may well have been wishful thinking on my part, but that would never turn 2 pregnancy tests positive though, would it!

I know this sounds like I'm totally dumn, but can somebody tell me if the 'placenta' and 'after birth' mean the same thing (sorry for asking silly question)

In my heart I seem to 'know' baba is ok, what do you lot think?

Thanks in advance. Your support has been such a tremendous help for us. xx

RoseQuartz - I asked MW to check for my DS heartbeat at 15 weeks cos I was really anxious throughout my pg and she did say to me not to be alarmed as it can be difficult to find so early on.

The pg tests will still come up pg regardless of whether LO is fine or otherwise. The HCG levels take a good few weeks to drop if you m/c. I was still showing up pg 2 weeks after my m/c (not saying that is what is happening with you, just my experience).

I don't know what to advise other than to think positive thoughts until Friday.

Big big hugs xx

lulumama · 22/08/2007 18:54

placenta and afterbirth are the same

placenta also has a blood flow that can be picked up by doppler, but is much much slower than foetal heart rate

sorry that you are going thought this, some women do bleed heavily and have a healthy baby, so fingers crossed for you

KD73 · 22/08/2007 18:57

Hi Rosequartz,

I had a m/c earlier this month and was told that your hormone levels remain such that a pg test will be positive .

Please keep positive (remember your not in pain and that is good )and try to rest.

beansprout · 22/08/2007 20:13

Rose, it's so hard that we can't give you a definitive answer but I hope everything is ok. Trust your instincts, staying positive is the best thing you can do otherwise you could drive yourself half mad. Will keep everything crossed for you.

RoseQuartz · 22/08/2007 21:35

thankyou for your support..........it really shocked me to learn that preg test can still be positive for so long after m/c though....that is so cruel in itself really, isn't it, as it misleads you into thinking all is well.

So sorry to learn of your miscarriage hun, how brave of you to offer your support at such a tough time in your own life. You seem to be such a lovely, genuine, unselfish person. I wish you well in future.

Suppose the scan is the only way that's gonna show for deffo tho, so we'll see what happens on friday at the hospital.
TAKE CARE, AND THANKS 2 U, BIG BIG HUGS XX

i went to the ante natal clinic with cramps when i was 15 weeks pg with ds and they couldnt pick up a heartbeat.....my heart was in my mouth, i was truly hysterical.they scanned me and all was well.the scanner told me that because they are still so tiny and moving around so much the detecter sometimes fails to pick it up.good luck with ur scan and i hope u have the same outcome i did x

KD73 · 23/08/2007 08:25

Hi Rosequartz,

I am so glad that others have more positive notes than mine.

Keep hopeful and let us know how Friday goes.

Keep hopeful and try to rest....

ledodgy · 23/08/2007 08:33

Rosequartz I've only just seen this thread. My mw also checked the hb at 16 weeks and warned me that at this stage it's difficult to find so they don't always hear it so don't give up hope.
With my first pregnancy I had a heavy bleed at 16 weeks with clots and everything. I was convinced I was losing the baby. They gave me a scan and the baby was fine but they said my placenta was quite low and this could have got grazed. The baby is now starting school next month!
I hope everything works out ok for you and i'll be thinking of you tommorrow.

berolina · 23/08/2007 08:43

I had a massive bleed, very much like the one you describe, at 17 weeks, and another at 21, due to placenta praevia or 'low-lying' placenta. If your bleed was sudden, gushing and painless it could well have been that. With the 17-week bleedI was terrified too, having had two miscarriages last summerand three altogether, but the baby was fine and now due in approx 3 weeks.

I would get a repeat scan asap.

RoseQuartz · 23/08/2007 09:33

Hi,
oh thanks for sharing your experiences with me, it helps so much.
I have had no pains at all - just a sudden massive gush when I haemorrhaged 10 days ago, and period like blood loss for few days after, and since then its been brown stringy clots.
But no pains at all.
Let's hope this baby will also be starting school a few years from now then, eh.
Thanks so much, knowing there is hope and that other people have come out of this with good results, keeps us 'afloat' in a way. DH and I would have been driven to despair otherwise, thankyou loads.
Anyway roll on tomorrow.

beansprout · 24/08/2007 16:25

Hi Rosequartz, hope it went well today. Please let us know how you are, am keeping everything crossed for you

ledodgy · 24/08/2007 16:38

Just checking in to see how it went today?

RoseQuartz · 24/08/2007 20:35

Phew...............had a scan today, and baby's heart was beating away nicely, and he/she was so active sonographer had difficulty catching up with it!!

Still not too sure where all the blood came from, but dr reckons it should clear up completely in about a week or so.

Thankyou so much for your concerns, and for keeping your fingers crossed for us.
Your support has really helped us through this 'trying' time...more than you will ever realise.

Thankyou, thankyou and thankyou loads, take care you lot, and hope all goes well for you.
