Has anybody chose not to have this. I'm 35 weeks pregnant and haven't had it as am still unsure about it. Haven't had the flu vaccine either.

Why are you unsure about it?
What's going to happen that's worse than your baby getting whooping cough and being really ill

Jesskir89 · 31/10/2019 06:37

I had mine at 17 weeks its recommended by midwife and doctors

PintOfBovril · 31/10/2019 06:38

I had both... What are your concerns? Whooping cough is very very serious for a baby. The purpose of the immunisation in pregnancy is to protect the baby before they can have their own vaccination.

custardbear · 31/10/2019 06:38

I've had whooping cough twice and it's awful! Honestly, I'd have the vaccine for myself and my baby - definitely had the flu one as flu is very dangerous for pregnant mums, my brother is an ITU doctor and flu season = pregnant mums in ITU

PERSONALLY I'd have the jabs

moleeye · 31/10/2019 06:40

Madness. Get them both done ASAP

I had flu in Feb at 33 weeks. I was so ill I was hospitalised and quarantined. I had the vaccine, it could have been much worse for the both of us.

MustardScreams · 31/10/2019 06:45

Get them done, your baby could die from whooping cough. No idea why you would want that. As you’ve left it so late I’m not sure if there will be time for the immunity to cover your baby when they are born.

OlderthenYoungerNow · 31/10/2019 06:47

I don't know anyone that's admitted to me not getting a vaccine to avoid their newborns getting whooping cough or for them getting the flu.

There is no sane reason not too. You think the NHS are secretly injected people for other reasons? 🙄

MyFartWillGoOn · 31/10/2019 06:47

Knowing someone who lost her precious 6 week old baby girl to whooping cough several years ago, I don't understand why anyone wouldn't get this?

Please do this to protect your baby in those precious first few weeks

Peony99 · 31/10/2019 06:49

I've had both as they're totally safe.

By all means take the chance of getting flu yourself, but the whooping cough jab protects your baby from a hideous illness. That's not a responsible risk to take.

JenniR29 · 31/10/2019 06:50

They are both perfectly safe. You know what isn’t safe? Leaving your newborn exposed to whooping cough. It can be fatal.

Phillipa12 · 31/10/2019 06:51

I struggle massively with the mindset of some people over vaccines. Flu can kill, pregnant or not but you are at higher risk when pregnant, and the same for whooping cough, it can kill, esp in babies under 3 months old. You have probably followed all the guidelines about food and drink in pregnancy but you are unsure on this one........dont be stupid and get the vaccine.

45andfine · 31/10/2019 06:52

I also hate the idea of willingly introducing "strange unknown" things into my body and prefer to trust that my body would be able to cope with anything that nature throws at it... However, I also know the heartbreaking anguish of watching one of my babies struggling to breathe and being seriously poorly. I've therefore had both jabs. You'd never forgive yourself if anything happened.

Benes · 31/10/2019 06:53

Why on earth wouldn't you? Why would you out your newborn baby at risk? Thankfully in real life I don't know anyone who refuses vaccinations.

dietcokemum · 31/10/2019 06:55

I knew a baby who died of pertussis and a pregnant woman who had a long ITU stay due to flu . You're an idiot if you don't get them.

JenniR29 · 31/10/2019 06:56

‘I also hate the idea of willingly introducing "strange unknown" things into my body and prefer to trust that my body would be able to cope with anything that nature throws at it’

You realise nature is brutal right? It wants you dead by 40 and to have 10+ children in the hope that one or two may survive to adulthood. The only reason people live to the age they do now is thanks to modern medicine and technology.

ilovemykids5 · 31/10/2019 07:14

I just suffer with anxiety and hate the thought of putting things in my body at this time. Of course I don't want anything to happen to my baby.

OP posts:
MustardScreams · 31/10/2019 07:21

It’s just a vaccine, you’re not putting things in your body that will do anything apart from protect your baby.

Doty question thing vitamins, or eating healthily for your child? Seriously, give your head a wobble and get it done.

Benes · 31/10/2019 07:25

The NHS is on its arse financially. They wouldn't recommend it if it wasn't important and safe.

BeanBag7 · 31/10/2019 07:25

"Putting things in my body"
Presumably you put food and drink into your body? Vitamins and routine medications? Because you need those things to stay healthy and alive. Well you may need vaccines to stay healthy and alive too.

Teachermaths · 31/10/2019 07:38

Putting things in your body is not fine. But watching your newborn be seriously ill is fine Hmm

Get yourself the vaccine ASAP. Your body might cope. Your newborn will struggle and possibly die.

Randomdogbite · 31/10/2019 07:44

The vaccine is actually for your baby so they have immunity for those few weeks after birth before they have their first jabs. Sadly tiny babies still die every year I don't know why you would hesitate.

Getoffmylilo · 31/10/2019 07:48

I had the vaccine and still got whooping cough, but in a much much milder form than I might have done. The mind boggles as to what the unvaccinated full fat version of whooping cough would have been like. Get the vaccine.

Bunnybigears · 31/10/2019 07:51

I am not pregnant but just wanted to tell you I currently have whooping cough and the Doctor who diagnosed me said he had seen huge numbers of people with it this year. Get vaccinated they dont offer these things unless they are needed.

Ginandtonic31 · 31/10/2019 07:52

I have my flu jab every year at work (work in a hospital) and never thought not to this year whilst pregnant! I'm also booked in for whooping cough.

I don't know why people would put themselves or baby at risk! You would be more anxious if baby got ill!

Will you be getting your baby vaccinated when the time comes? If you will how is this any different?

Have you heard of herd immunity? Basically we need a high majority of people to have vaccines to stop the spread of things. Not only by having the flu caching or whooping cough vaccine protect protect you and your baby, it protects me and my baby and others too! If everyone took the same attitude and nobody got vaccinated the spread of these illnesses would be dreadful and all vulnerable newborns as vulnerable people would be at s very high risk of getting something.

SpadesOfGlory · 31/10/2019 08:08

I asked myself if I would feel guilty if my baby became seriously ill due to something I could have prevented.

The answer was yes. So I got the jabs, and my baby has had all his vaccinations so far as well. Why wouldn't you want to do the best for your baby? It literally has no effect on you other than a sore arm for a day or two!
