Has anybody chose not to have this. I'm 35 weeks pregnant and haven't had it as am still unsure about it. Haven't had the flu vaccine either.

Please get them done.

I contracted Whooping Cough as a very young baby (albeit a long time ago) and very nearly died. It then developed into Pneumonia and resulted in me spending a long period in ICU.

The resulting damage to my lungs has caused numerous issues through my life and will almost certainly shorten my lifespan. I am terrified of every cough and cold.

Why would you risk that for your little one ?

JenniR29 · 31/10/2019 08:34

I’m amazed at how many people subscribe to this ‘I’m not putting unnatural things in my body’ nonsense.

The food you eat and the water you drink has all been chemically treated. I’m sure at some point in your life you will have received medical intervention (drugs, surgery, stitches etc). Do you go without shampoo? Toothpaste?

Also natural does not equal safe. I feel that not enough people know this!

SheBloodyNameChangedAgain · 31/10/2019 12:12

Anti Vaxers are to bolame for this. Why the hell would you not protect your child? Sorry if I am being harsh OP but seriously.

fonxey · 31/10/2019 12:39

I'm glad you've at least considered to ask about it. But please consider the risks of having whopping cough or flu as a baby, or if you continue this unfortunate train of thought by refusing MMR and other vaccines, that your baby is more likely to die from not being vaccinated, than being vaccinated.

Anti-vaccination is unfortunately becoming more prevalent. So the number of people not immune to things like measles, or similar are going up which puts your child at even greater risk of catching a serious disease which years ago would be minimal.

Do you really think that years ago before had vaccinations we were better off because we went injecting ourselves with "poisons"? Back in the day when child mortality was a lot higher. When polio meant living in an iron lung? Is that what you'd want for a child, to go back to that?

When children really were dying from whooping cough, and it was more common?

If you don't vaccinate and everyone else around you doesn't you increase the risk.

Trouble is nowadays we don't hear about things like measles and whooping cough so we think the risk isn't there. They have healthy children, it validates their choice. But they're just piggybacking of the fact that for years people have had vaccines and the disease isn't as prevalent.

As vaccine rates go down though the chance of getting sick will increase and your child won't be protected.

And in today's world by doing this you are willingly putting your child at risk of death. Kinda like walking out in the road without looking to see if a car is coming. Maybe that road isn't very much used and you only get 1 car a week. But soon it might be more populated and the risk greater. I

The flu vaccine doesn't prevent the baby from getting flu.

ChilledBee · 31/10/2019 12:49

In 2012 the UK experienced a nationwide outbreak (epidemic) of pertussis (whooping cough), a highly infectious disease that can cause serious complications including death, especially in young babies. In 2012 there were over 9,300 cases in England alone – more than ten times as many as in recent years. In the years since 2012 there has been a fall in cases, but numbers are still high compared to the years before the 2012 epidemic (see the graph at the bottom of this section). 14 babies under three months old died of pertussis in 2012, and another 18 died between 2013 and 2016. There were no deaths from pertussis in 2017, and no deaths in the first nine months of 2018. Babies under three months of age are most vulnerable to severe disease

Just because some people are making up things to try and prove their point. No babies have died of whooping cough in the UK since 2016. So lots of babies are not dying every year.

Rotorua · 31/10/2019 12:52

Please consider it getting it done.
I had whopping cough when I was little (5 years old), I can't even imagine how terrible it would to catch it as a baby. I still remember not being able to breath at night during the cough fits and how scared my parents were when I couldn't breath.
It's a terrible illness and can easily be avoided by just one jab

4yearsnosleep · 31/10/2019 12:59

Babies can die from both whooping cough and flu. It should be a no brainer

ChilledBee · 31/10/2019 13:02

The flu vaccine doesn't protect the baby for the 2nd time. It protects the vulnerable pregnant mother from flu.

Inkythemouse · 31/10/2019 13:07

A friends baby died from whooping cough a few months ago. She is really struggling with the guilt of not having the vaccine.

asmv · 31/10/2019 13:15

We are incrediblylucky to have vaccinations available in our country.

I had needle phobia for over 13 years but have had all of my vaccs/blood tests etc... becoming a parent means it is no longer about you.

If youve ever seen a baby suffer from whooping cough it would change your mind.

MrsXx4 · 31/10/2019 13:22

You have anxiety over putting stuff in your body but not anxiety over your baby getting seriously ill and you just watching thinking ‘at least I didn’t put anything in my body?!’

Ridiculous! Anti vaxxers are the worst!

YorkshirePud1 · 31/10/2019 13:27

Your anxiety seems very misplaced. Are you not more anxious about the possibility of your baby becoming seriously, potentially fatally, ill? It's a huge gamble not having the vaccine.

ChilledBee · 31/10/2019 13:30

@Inkythemouse

In this country? All the stuff I've found says there has been no deaths in the UK since 2016. Babies have contracted whooping cough, yes. But none have died.

JenniR29 · 31/10/2019 13:47

@fonxey Well said. We have become a victim of our own success when it comes to vaccinations.

pinkstar01 · 31/10/2019 14:07

I'm 30 weeks and had both, I would take anything they offer me that would help ensure my baby's and my good health.

My dad who is early 60s and is currently out with the flu, it was so bad he had to be hospitalized and given a painkiller via drip and a nebulizer because he couldn't breathe.

Pregnancy lowers your immune system so it's a no brainer really.

AuroraBor · 31/10/2019 14:08

@ChilledBee
This report mentiones a confirmed infant death between April and June this year.
www.gov.uk/government/publications/pertussis-laboratory-confirmed-cases-reported-in-england-2019
In general, the deaths seem to have reduced since 2012 specifically because the maternity vaccination program was introduced (if you read other government whooping cough reports)

ChilledBee · 31/10/2019 14:23

Ah so 1 baby that a MN user might know(!) over the last 3 years.

I had it in my last pregnancy but it didn't feel right. My in laws weren't happy as they lost a relative who died of a unexplained seizure on the day she had an Anti D injection. It was said to be unrelated but her family have obviously been sceptical about that.

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 31/10/2019 14:29

I've had every vaccine going including 2 doses of anti d. No I'll effects from any of them. Speak to your midwife about your anxieties. Hopefully she can put you at ease so you feel comfortable with your choice.

titchy · 31/10/2019 14:35

Chilledbee - deaths have been reduced BECAUSE of the vaccine - you're supporting the argument for it!

JenniR29 · 31/10/2019 14:54

‘I had it in my last pregnancy but it didn't feel right’

Ah that ‘gut feeling’ that totally replaces all science and logic 😒. The fact that there haven’t been any deaths recently is due to, you’ve guessed it...... vaccination!!

I still can’t believe that in 2019 we are still having to convince people to protect themselves and their children against diseases that should have been eradicated by now.

Keha · 31/10/2019 14:57

Please get the vaccine OP. Perhaps it is very rare nowadays that babies die, but that doesn't mean some don't go through serious ill health and have long term problems. Even if someone told me this vaccine had some very rare risks/side effects, I would have it because the risks of whooping cough (and flu) are far higher.

Pinkblueberry · 31/10/2019 14:59

Of course I don't want anything to happen to my baby.

Err then get the vaccination Hmm
