Appendicitis in pregnancy

Hi everyone,

I’m a ftm 12 weeks pregnant and in hospital right now for acute appendicitis. It took a while to figure out the problem and when I finally got into surgery my appendix ruptured on removal!

Being pregnant I’m just concerned about a) the effects of the general anaesthetic on the baby b) the effects of other drugs I’ve had to take like morphine, and c) the effects of the trauma on the body to the baby.

Had a scan this morning and the baby’s heart was beating but she wasn’t as active as has been, although the sonographer did see movement.

I think this is pretty rare in pregnancy and just wondering if any others have experienced this, have friends that have, or have knowledge on any of this?

Thanks v much in advance!

I had a ruptured appendix in early pregnancy (I didn't know this, they thought it was a cyst on my ovary!). I wanted to put off surgery as we didn't realise how serious it was, and because of my pregnancy.

They were worried it would rupture and we'd both die, so I eventually had the surgery at 16 weeks which involved cutting everything but my womb, no keyhole.

My DD has just turned 14 years and has had no lasting effects Smile

Hope you're soon feeling better Flowers

I had my appendix rupture at 14weeks. I had to have keyhole surgery to remove it as there was no other option. Risk of miscarriage increased significantly doctors informed me. However my now 7 year old is happy and healthy without any side effects. Stay positive. Good luck

Huge thanks cheshcat for getting back to me with your experience - what stressful times we have all had! Great to hear how others and their LOs have pulled through :)
