Would you eat sushi when pregnant?

I’m thinking of going to Itsu soon as I have a real craving for sushi. I read this on their website... it sounds fine doesn’t it?

  1. Is your fish safe for pregnant women?
Our tuna and salmon are considered safe to eat raw. Our salmon is EU farmed, pellet fed and individually inoculated, which means it’s exempt from the requirement to be frozen prior to being eaten raw or lightly cooked. Our tuna is deep frozen to a temperature at or below -60C, however each pregnancy is unique to an individual so it’s best to liaise directly with your GP.

NHS says it’s fine. And ITSU is very clean and reputable. I think the only thing is to limit the amount you have in a week, I think it’s two portions of salmon and tuna each.

I wouldn't risk it. I really crave it, but I'll wait until the baby is born. However I know that's illogical and I'm sure nothing would happen, but I couldn't forgive myself if it did. I've also never met a pregnant woman or one that has been pregnant that would touch sushi from anywhere. But I think the people I know are super OTT...

Have veggie version

dementedpixie · 26/10/2019 09:15

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/foods-to-avoid-pregnant/ nhs says its ok

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 26/10/2019 09:23

I’d eat it (well I’m vegetarian so I wouldn’t but you know what I mean)

RopeBrick · 26/10/2019 09:28

Yes. The benefit from the raw fish far outweighs the tiny risk of food poisoning.

Courtney555 · 26/10/2019 09:30

It's fine. Go enjoy. I have with all my pregnancies, the risk of food poisoning from somewhere like that is so small.

rosydreams · 26/10/2019 09:30

as long as its a supermarket one with cooked fish i think m&s has some

Yorkshiredolls · 26/10/2019 09:34

yes, i’ve had sushi from wasabi a couple of times this pregnancy as i craved it, I had the salmon and the prawn nigiris and other assorted. the only ones I gave a wide berth set the raw tuna ones. I don’t know why but raw tuna just feels more wrong to me than salmon.

Yorkshiredolls · 26/10/2019 09:35

and I did check with wasabi customer services that the salmon was suitable beforehand hand, theirs also is british farmed etc and considered safe writhing nhs guidelines

Peony99 · 26/10/2019 09:48

Absolutely. It's been frozen in Itsu, so there's no reason not to.

30 weeks pregnant here and Itsu is my fave lunch spot.

You're all amazing ! Seriously people have told me I shouldn't eat any seafood and not even cooked prawns!! And have tutted and said I was brave when I ate cooked prawns ! I can't even imagine how nuts my MIL or SIL would go if I touched sushi.

mummytobe2020 · 26/10/2019 10:57

So many BS old wives tales out there and outdated advice around pregnancy ! Also, such a lesson on how to stand up for yourself / not care about being judged for making decisions that are right for you.

ronniemipperton · 26/10/2019 13:22

I asked the woman at the Waitrose sushi counter if their tuna was frozen first and she looked me like I’d asked if she’d dropped it on the floor before selling it 🤷‍♀️

I have eaten a LOT of tempura battered king prawn temaki rolls this pregnant though 😋
