Do you eat for two? And if you don't, do you calorie count?

I'm making a concerted effort to not eat too many calories from now on, having realised that 1. I'm 2 stone heavier already at 30wks 2. Mullerice has alot more calories that i realised!

I'm not going to be calorie counting as such, but i have been 'guilty' of not looking at fat / calorie content of what i'm eating while pregnant...just scoffing it.

Do you throw caution to the wind, or are you a 'careful' eater?

I would say just don't worry about dieting. Make sure you eat enough GOOD things and get your full portions of those, but don't be hard on yourself about the additional chubby things. I put on 35 pounds, easily 2 stone by 30 weeks, and thought I was eating less than usual. I'm quite small, and a lot of the medical people I saw through the pregnancy warned me I was gaining quite quickly and it would be hard to lose. But I had quite active morning sickness for the whole pregnancy and in the later stages I just physically couldn't fit that much food in because there was so much baby and no room above it, so I didn't know where the weight was coming from.

Horrifically, after giving birth, I came home to find out I'd lost 9 pounds. But then somehow the rest of the weight just fell off pretty quickly without dieting, and definitely without exercising. I'd read loads of things about celebrities eating nothing but marmite and dry toast and exercising 50 hours a day to lose their baby weight, and I was dreading this because I don't like dieting or exercising, and it turned out I got exactly my weight before back within about 5 months. My friends seem to have the same experiences - the body you had before, if that was your body's natural resting point and you weren't dieting all the time, seems to be the body you get again, pretty quickly. Although my god, I have no tone at all. I look the same, I weigh the same, but the tone has gone from, say, plasticine to water balloon.

thanks RGP! That is what the doc said too! I measured my bump today tho and it hasnt grown at all in the last week, so has worried me even more. Shouldnt it expand lots in the last trimester?

RGPargy · 17/08/2007 16:49

dal - baby might have changed positions etc. I think you should put the tape measures away and just enjoy the rest of your pregnancy, seriously. If there was anything to worry about, the GP would have told you!

I'm getting really fat and I'm only 5 + 1! I've put on about 2/3 pounds in last month (went on holiday and eating like a pig since PG as SO hungry) but this can't account for my tummy, which is HUGE and sticky outy and I am already having to wear my fat jeans, and my tighter clothes are very tight! Is this normal? It isn't baby, as that's the size of a baked bean at moment - should I be worried that am getting this bloated?

PurpleLostPrincess · 19/08/2007 21:47

I put on 2 or 3 stones with DS and DD1, then I m/c'd 5 years ago at 10 weeks. During that short time of pg, I ate everything in sight then after the m/c I continued to eat like that to comfort myself. I've never shifted the weight.

Hence, I've started this pg at size 22 (ish)! I have to say I was dreading putting on untold amounts of weight but I'm now 35+1 and I've only put on 10 kilos (22lbs) which might sound a lot but I'm pleased with myself!! People have been telling me I've lost weight around the rest of my belly and its all gone to my bump.

I had hyperemesis at the beginning and have only craved fruit and veg and icecream/lollies since I got my appetite back. In between, I've had excruitating heartburn so I've avoided anything fatty because I know it'll only make it worse! I've gone off all my usual vices which is very handy (apart from pizza!).

I never did calorie count, I just either eat healthily or not. I'm glad I've got myself into reasonable eating habits this time around though as I'm looking forward to keeping them going and losing as much weight as possible when this lo arrives.

Having said all of that, I've been unexplainably hungry this last few days and need to eat every few hours to avoid the heartburn. I'm amazed at how much food I've been able to put away but I guess thats the last few weeks while the baby is at its biggest!?

*body, not belly!

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 19/08/2007 23:16

With my first dd I had hyperemesis and weighed the same at full term as I did at the start (13 stone).I was about 2 stone overweight at the start though and dd weighed 7lb 15oz at 39 weeks.

I am pg again and started off at 11 stone and have had hyperemeis again so have worried about not gaining weight but at 25+ weeks I have put a stone on and growth is fine.

I am still v sickly so eat less.I just try and make sure what I eat is good

anotherbadmother · 20/08/2007 02:52

I let it all go when I fell pregnant. I was so tired that I went from going to the gym four times a week to no exercise at all. Just the smell of something like broccoli made me feel sick, so was eating mostly junk food (Maccas didn't make me feel sick for some reason ).

During the second trimester I got things under control a bit more and started eating more healthily again, but I ate heaps! I was still having all the junk food as well.

I put on 20 kilos (about 40 pounds I think )!! DD has just turned one, and I am almost back to my start weight. I didn't make an effort to lose baby weight, and have been eating lots as still bf. I walk everywhere with DD though so get quite a lot of incidental exercise.

I just decided to relax about it all and listen to my body (stomach ).

However, I was a smoker before becoming pregnant and stopped the moment I found out and haven't had one since. Also hardly had any alcohol - one or two drinks a month maybe.

swalesie · 20/08/2007 09:52

I copletely pigged out, i saw it as the green light to gorge myself on all the wrong things, i was eating for 5 reather than two, (i stopped smoking too, and sill are stopped)

I put on lots of weight, i now realise that it was probly a really unhealthy start to my babys life, all the crap i ate I also went fron 9stone 5, to 12 stone, baba is now 10 months and ive still got half a stone to loose till im beck to normal.

Nezt time i'll eat sensibly.

MerryMarigold · 20/08/2007 10:34

anotherbadmother, i was like you. loved my maccie's in the 1st trimester! i also put on 20kg and lost it again within 6mths, but my stomach muscles are SHOT so still don't fit things i could!

next time i am hoping not to blob out too much, but i had such a wonderful pregnancy last time without a care in the world for myself. also had loads and loads of milk (body trying to shed calories??!!). guess i'll see how i react when it happens next time.

fatslag · 20/08/2007 10:38

I was so careful with my second pregnancy because I put on far to much weight during the first. I felt queasy and bloated a lot which helped!

One thing which I found easy was to eliminate the evening meal. I'd just have an apple or something. I always made sure to have a full lunch and a snack in the afternoon. Skipping dinner helped me to sleep better and not feel so bloated and uncomfortable at night.

It's not really a diet but it did help me to keep my weight gain down to 17lbs (I'm only 5ft1 and well overweight, hence the pseudo!) and it is the evening meal that often gets stored because you don't do much physically to work it off. No, sex doesn't count, it doesn't usually last long enough to make a difference

becklespeckle · 20/08/2007 11:23

I just eat my normal diet when pg but with more snacks between meals! I tend to follow what my body wants, some days I am starving and others not so hungry so as long as I fell full I guess I am okay. I do try to make sure I have fresh fruit/veg every day though which normally I am a little lazy about.
At 21 weeks I have now gained around 10 lbs which is not much for me, I was heavier at this point with my boys! Overall I put on 4.5 stone with the first and 2.5 with the second although I think most of that was water retention as I was only left with 1/2 stone to shift after each.

RGPargy · 20/08/2007 11:29

I'm too scared to weigh myself anymore!!

Before i got pg i had lost 17lbs. At about 22 weeks (i think) i had put it all back on, plus an extra 2lbs. Now i dare not get on the scales. I dont want to see the digits go up to the next stone as i'm big enough as it is and i'll only get majorily depressed!

Cazwa · 20/08/2007 20:39

I am pregnant for the second time in 2 years having got a 1 year old DD and am 7 months pregnant. First pregnancy I ate like a hog, couldn't control it, and put on over 3 stone, working out at least a stone per trimester. However, after 5 months of BF I'd lost it all bar half a stone. The 6th month I started to introduce a bottle and the last half stone shifted, so I was back at normal weight when I fell pregnant again.

This pregnancy Im not gorging as much but totally eating what I want when I want, just making sure I have an underlying balanced diet, i.e. lots of fruit, veg, protein, fibre, then loads of sweets and cakes on top! Not very sensible but there you go. I haven;t been p*ed in 2 years so feel like I deserve it. Anyway, what i meant to say was that again Im putting on a stone per trimester so far. However this time Im not worried as im pretty sure it will come off again even quicker with BFing and running round after 2 babies.

I cant believe some of you are dieting and being uber careful, just relax and enjoy being pregnant.
