No embryo at 6 weeks

I've been having cramps and sharp pains in my abdomen so the early pregnancy unit performed an internal ultrasound.

Based on dates I should be 6 weeks and 4 days. From the scan, they said it's a very early pregnancy, definitely less than 6 weeks. They could see a gestational sac, a yolk sac but no heartbeat or embryo. When I asked further about the gestation as my dates make it over 6 weeks, they said the gestational sac is the right size for 6 weeks but they can't see an embryo. I have to go back in 2 weeks for another scan to see if there's been any progression.

At this point I'm not hopeful. I got a clear positive 3 weeks and 1 day ago, so I don't see how I can be any less than 6 weeks. But, despite the size, they were certain that the pregnancy is less than 6 weeks.

There's a cyst on my ovary which is what they think is causing the pain and if the pain gets worse or I start bleeding I have to go back.

Has anyone had similar and it ended up that the baby was ok?

There is data on size of sac with no embryo likelihood of miscarriage - do you know the size of the sac?

There were a few measurements taken. I think they said the average was 6.7mm. Does that make sense? One measurement they took was 8mm.

The guidelines are 20mm recently changed to 25mm as a cut off for sac size with no embryo. Seems like you are way off this. 1 week should be enough to get answers if you're willing to pay for a private scan. Otherwise it's an annoying 'wait and see' situation. I wish you the best x

Thank you for your response.

From googling (I know!) it seems as though the size of the gestational sac is quite small for 6 weeks, but I just don't see how I can be any less than that, based on getting a positive so early.

It's the uncertainty that is so difficult. I might look in to a private scan for a weeks time so I can hopefully get some answers sooner.

Hopefully everything will be ok I went at 5weeks +3 and they could only see a sac went back at exactly 7 weeks and there was a tiny baby with a heartbeat.

Thanks for the response.

Based on dates, I should have been 6+4 yesterday. So, close to 7 weeks. I just don't see how this can be a viable pregnancy. I'm thinking of booking a private scan for next Friday when I should be 7+5, and 7 weeks at an absolute minimum given when I got a positive test. The only thing is that I don't have a report from yesterday's scan so I wouldn't know if there had been any progress, unless they could see a heartbeat. It could potentially give me an answer either way, or it could leave me more confused.
