Isit safe to take anti malaria tablets (Malarone) during the 1st trimester ? I’m supposed to be travelling to west Africa I think I’m pregnant

I looked into this before and the uk advice was no, I did find a Belgian study which said malarone was safe but it was rather overwhelmed by all the other advice saying no. I think there is an abundance of caution but The problem is you are more susceptible to malaria when pregnant. do you need to go? If there is high risk where you are going I would give it some careful thought.

Is your visit essential ? If not advice would be to delay trip until after delivery or if you establish you’re not pregnant to use contraception / avoid sex until back in the UK .
Speak to your GP or local travel clinic .

@bengalcat the thing is tickets have been booked ages ago, I doubt they are refundable 🙈

No it’s not safe to take them - it’s actually considered safer risking malaria during pregnancy. But bear in mind where there is malaria in Africa there tends to be zika too (which can cause major problems in the first 2 trimesters). In your situation I would cancel even if there was a fianancial loss to me.
