28+5 reduced blood flow cord to baby

Hi ladies!
Just wondering if anyone has experienced something similar to me and has any advice!

I went for my 28 week scan, consultant and GTT test today. During my scan she listened in on the blood flow from cord to baby and it appears baby is struggling to get what he needs. I didn't see my regular consultant today and had a stand in doctor who dodged all my questions with 'your own consultant will know best' I've left feeling absolutely distraught I have no idea what to look out for incase my placenta totally gives up. I don't know anything! Has anyone else had reduced blood flow for cord to baby and gone on to have a healthy baby? I have to go back in on Monday for another scan and consultant appointment it just seems so fair away to be in limbo☹️ xx

What were your Doppler readings? Did they comment on growth at all? Did they just say reduced flow or did they talk about umbilical resistance? Did they also do a MCA Doppler (blood flow in baby's brain)?

It sounds like you haven't been given very much info at all and that isn't fair of them. I would recommend phoning your midwife either tonight or tomorrow (depending on how anxious you feel), even if it's just for reassurance.

I do think however that if there was a major issue you would have been sent straight round to the maternity unit. Take comfort from the fact that they are happy to let you wait until Monday.

I had increased umbilical resistance at my 28 weeks scan, at the very top end of normal. Increased resistance can cause growth issues as the baby doesn't get what it needs. Mine resolved itself, getting better each scan until the 36 week scan where it had completely resolved. No growth issues etc. I'm due next Tuesday and everything looks good, so much so that I'm discharged from the consultant and back to giving birth in the midwife led unit.

I wasn't told anything at all I've gone through my notes but can't make much sense of them. Baby is measuring around 2lbs 8 at the minute and they said this is on the small side. My DD was 5lbs12 at 41+1. And smaller babies seem to run in the family.

I think I will give MW a call like u say even if it's just to explain it in terms i will understand, but with my scan lasting 6 minutes and my consultant appointment lasting only 5 minutes. I'm really quite disappointed in the care I've received today so will looking at avenues to get this resolved. It's our body's and our babies we have every right to know exactly what is going on and when!

This was my first scan I went in without any worries, usually I'm panicking about something but I felt really confident but has turn't out it's been the worst one! 🙈

Did they plot baby's size to your personalized growth chart? The one that takes your weight/height and your first child's birth weight into account? If your first was 5lb12 at that gestation then 2lb8 doesn't sound that small.

I've attached a pic of my 28 weeks scan results. The doppler readings are at the bottom. Did they give you a sheet like this, and if so what does it say?

Here are my ultrasound notes for today's app! There's no written notes in where they usually are! Thankyou for taking the time out to reply to me I'm going out of my mind I've tried reaching my midwife, but she's off duty I've called community midwives and they've said they will call back as it's not an emergency which is fine and I completely understand why their phones can't be held by me! So I will await their call back x

The big thing I was told to keep an eye out for when we had issues with the blood flow/cord was movements. DD ended up being delivered at 34 weeks when it was decided due to lack of movements high pressure and reduced growth she was better out than in. The only thing you can really do (other than getting back in touch with the hospital) I’d monitor movements. Anything you’re not happy with call back up and get on the ctg machine.

Did they do a Doppler scan?

LilliesMummyx · 17/10/2019 21:45

I've got a Doppler scan booked Monday. Luckily he's moving loads tonight, such a worrying time with such little info! I suppose they have to see how it goes over a period of time but without any idea of what I could be faced with I'm freaking out!
Hope your DD is doing well now. Fingers crossed he stays in as long as possible! Xx

That all sounds really positive 🤞🏼 Everything goes well Monday!

Dd is great. An 18month old terror and we are now expecting number 2, hoping for a smoother ride this time!

Your umbilical PI is 1.44 which is exactly what mine was at the 28 week scan. It's on the 95th centile of normal but it is still normal. I saw my consultant the day after my 28 week scan and he explained that he had zero concerns based off her size, weight and the umbilical cord measurements but that they would check each time in case the PI/RI got any higher.

They don't even seem to have measured your RI or then done a MCA doppler, so I'm assuming the sonographer wasn't too concerned.

For comparison, once my sonographer realised my umbilical cord measurements were high normal, she insisted on doing the MCA Doppler and took the time to explain it all.

Fingers crossed you get some reassurance. It is bad that the consultant didn't explain anything to you today.

You will know more next week. Be reassured that they will do everything to make sure you have a safe delivery.

LilliesMummyx · 17/10/2019 22:18

Thankyou all for your responses. Just a waiting game now! Xx

Hey! I know this is an old post. But just curious to know how you got on? I’m in the same situation! 28+4 high PI x
