I haven’t had sex until the 20th of July but when I went to my scan today I was measuring 13 weeks 6 days which is literally impossible

I had spoken to the lady who scanned & also midwife and they said you give or take a week or so but how is it possible I’m messing 13 weeks 6 days when I hadn’t been with anyone since the 20th? Has this ever happened to anyone? Also would I be able to find out gender earlier if I am just measuring bigger?

Also, I should only be 12 weeks & 4 days

What was the date of your last period

Celebelly · 16/10/2019 18:09

That sounds perfectly right? If you conceived on July 20, you would be 14 weeks and 4 days pregnant. Given you can get pregnant a few days after sex, it sounds entirely accurate.

The first two weeks of pregnancy are the two weeks before you conceive.

Ohyesiam · 16/10/2019 18:10

Well it is about13 weeks since July 20 th isn’t it? Or just under.

Emma2202 · 16/10/2019 18:10

I honestly have no idea, I thought it would only count from the day you conceived. I’m totally clueless

My last period was the 6th of july!

Ah, cross-posted. Pregnancy isn't dated from conception/intercourse date. It's dated from two weeks prior (which for people with a standard cycle is often around when their last period was). So by the time you conceive, you are regarded as two weeks' pregnant By the time you get a test positive, you are usually four weeks' pregnant, etc.

This will help you with the dates: www.whattoexpect.com/due-date-calculator/

DartmoorDoughnut · 16/10/2019 18:12

They date a pregnancy from the first day of your last period aka the day you started bleeding.

Bellasblankexpression · 16/10/2019 18:12

Pregnancy is dated from the date of your last period not conception date

Emma2202 · 16/10/2019 18:14

Thank you all so much. I honestly am so stupid I never even knew that it was counted from the last period!!

Your dates are entirely normal.

Soontobe60 · 16/10/2019 18:14

And no, a later date won't mean you can identify your baby's 'gender' any earlier, but you may well be able to find out its sex.

Celebelly · 16/10/2019 18:15

You can find sex out from 16 weeks, but it's more reliable around 20, really.

Bellasblankexpression · 16/10/2019 18:16

I’m surprised the person who scanned you didn’t explain!

ShowOfHands · 16/10/2019 18:16

If you think about it, it makes perfect sense. Most women before scans and stretching back hundreds of years would have simply calculated it from the last time they had a period. So we continue to do the same now. Scans are only a v modern invention.

Emma2202 · 16/10/2019 18:21

When I asked the lady who scanned me all she said was “that’s the measurements I’m getting so I’m not sure” lol

Soontobe60 what’s the difference between gender and sex? Haven’t you ever heard of a gender scan 😂

OP posts:
asmv · 16/10/2019 18:29

@Emma2202 sex is the biological term. Gender relates more to society. In terms of a baby and whether it has a penis or vagina, it is the sex.

Paraballa · 16/10/2019 18:32

Scans are not accurate for dating. Even at their most accurate they have a week leeway either side. So go by your own dates (last period, or ovulation if you know it) and don't worry too much about dates. Term is up to 42+6 anyway.

Neome · 16/10/2019 18:36

This totally messed up my head and family/friends relationships because I was in a similar position ie being told (I thought) I had conceived when literally impossible. Did not get the necessary information until years later when the damage was irreparable. Ho hum🙄

Moltenpink · 16/10/2019 18:41

OP I made the same mistake with my first, it makes sense (to me) that you would date from conception, but obviously not Smile

Boymummy3 · 17/10/2019 13:02

I think that's why u technically go to 42 weeks full term because the last 2 weeks are to make up for the 1st two weeks your not actually pregnant lol it doesn't really make sence does it but yeah 4 weeks pregnant by time your next missed period technically only 2 weeks lol so your dates are correct. Congratulations xxx
