we used an ink pad (silver and then black) and just cleaned him up really well afterwards so that he didn't swallow any. We figured there would be a lot less mess with ink than paint

I used a weak watercolour solution, and aplied it to their hand and feet with a sponge, and the details showed up really well, I also used heavier water colour paper.

For tiny baby hand prints you could try wrapping the print paper around a milk/ wine bottle, as babies hand is quite curvy iyswim, and the print seems to be neater, rather than when the hand is squashed flat.

non toxic bluue or pink powder paint... u can usually pick a kit up from a baby shop or ebay do them along with a card with a lovely poem on it and spaces for hands and feet to go!

Before applying it to your precious child, try it on yourself to ensure it comes off easily with, say, a babywipe!
