Early signs of FASDs

I am worried about my DD. I didn't know I was pregnant until 10 - 11 weeks and in that time I had a few heavy nights out, I would say around 3 or 4 Heavy nights of drinking Guinness and spiced rum. Anyway I gave birth at 40 weeks to a 8.3 pound baby no physical signs of Fasds but I am still worrying as I really want to pick up on any warning signs so we can get the right support. She is 8 weeks and been found with a hole in her heart which concerns me even more as this is linked to alcohol consumption during pregnancy Sad Anyone have some advice on what I should look out for at this stage? (8 weeks) or any reassurance stories would be very welcomed.

Thanks in advance

@fasparent is really helpful when talking about FAS. Perhaps she can help?

RubbingHimSourly · 09/10/2019 09:41

There are some physical features, low set ears, and a smooth, filtrum (( the thing under your nose )) also failure to thrive........but tbh I wouldn't worry too much. Exposure to alcohol is extremely common in the early days. If FASD developed that easily half the UK would have it.

If she is 8 wks i expect it would have been picked up on by now, the whole in the heart, yoou will never really know what caused that. Just reassure yourself that it can happen when people stick to the book from day 1 so may not be anything you have or haven't done.

Have looked after new born baby's who have had similar issues, but not FAS FASD related. FAS Children born with FAS do have a high chance do development issues Unfortunately there is no direct science., Recent study's now suggest that fathers too should sustain from alcohol for six months before conception too lower the risk of congenital heart problems. Lots of children far more than FAS FASD are born with congenital heart issues many repair naturally with time some left with just a heart murmur as our daughter's did., was not allowed antibiotics unless she was visiting the dentist or having any surgery had a high dosage prior too such visits.
Advice would be if you have concerns ask your GP for a referral too your local Genetics Clinic , should be able too have a Genetic genome's test too see if there are any other underlying issues which are unrelated too FASD. and perhaps give you closure
Would not worry at all at this age just enjoy your baby, nice healthy weight .,Fas Fasd children weight much less DD was prem and less than half than that. Enjoy baby XX

Children born with FAS often have symptoms
that are indistinguishable from ASD. Just keep a close eye on the baby’s development and raise any concerns with your GP.

@Dirtyjellycat thankyou! Smile

@RubbingHimSourly none of her features match the classic physical signs it's just the fasds hit I'm worried about. I agree! I doubt I would have even got pregnant if it wasn't for the liquor!

@june2007 thankyou that is reassuring. I just hope it's not caused any brain damage ect.. I can't help but worry about everything at the moment especially because of the hole in her heart Sad

@fasparent thanks for the reassuring words. Do babies with fas/fasds always have a low birth weight? I need to stop worrying about this as their is little that can be done at this point. I will take your advise and take her to the GP and express my concerns. Thankyou Smile

@Teddybear45 thanks! I will keep an eye out, she is very sleepy alot of the time at the moment so not showing any signs of hyperactivity hopefully it will stay that waySmile

Our DD had Full FAS at birth weighed in at 1lb 12oz. Hole in heart, skeletal issues, central nervous system disfunctions , learning difficulty's too mention a few. To day is an Adult owns her own house., has a car., and is in full time employment never been on any benefits , so even too be effected with this life time condition it's not all gloom and doom , not been easy but is as it is have too get on and enjoy life. Of course sadly some children will be worse effected. Have too be cheerful and happy 1st.
