Sack only at first scan - miscarriage?

Hi, I’m really worried and wondered if anyone could help. We had our first scan today, thinking we were around the 7/8 week mark. The scan showed a sac but no embryo. The technician said it could be a miscarriage or it could just be too early. We weren’t sure on dates as I’d lost my phone with my cycle dates on it (great timing).

Has anyone had a similar experience? We’re going back for another scan in 2 weeks but it’s a long time to sit and worry

Thanks very much

Hi,
Don’t worry, this happened to me and it was just too early to see anything else. I went back two weeks later and something had developed in the sac. I think we tend to date ourselves ahead of what appears on the scan. They don’t half scare you though!

Thanks Dotty, that makes me feel much better. The sonographer was pretty cold and didn’t give us much explanation. DH has been googling like mad all evening

I had this but was pretty sure if my dates, for me it ended it miscarriage. I was 9 weeks though. I've heard of both happening, a healthy heartbeat next scan or an empty sac still. I really hope for you it's the former and you're out a bit with dates and it implanted late.

We just looked at the paperwork today and the sheet tells us something completely different. Angry It says she could see a 4.1mm embryo with a yolk but no heartbeat. Have no idea what’s going on now... I spoke to the nurse and she said we need to go back next week to see if it’s grown

Thats definitely more positive and a yolk sac is definitely a good sign. I do know people who have had this, gone back a week later and seeb heartbeat. 2 weeks sounds too long to wait definitely. A week would be enough

emmab96 · 09/10/2019 20:37

I was 5/6 weeks all they saw on the scan was a sac and yolk went back two weeks later a fetus with heartbeat was visible now 18 weeks pregnant with a healthy little boy! Try to stay positive keeping fingers crossed x

Hi

I am going through something similar at the moment and going out of my mind. Had positive pregnancy test 4 weeks ago and week later started with brown discharge. Went to EPU at 6+2 (according to LMP) and they said they couldn't see anything, had HCG levels which went up nicely so thought everything was ok and dates were a bit off as i had irregular periods and was booked for a repeat scan 2 weeks later. Brown discharge continued until last friday i.e. total of 2.5 weeks.

Went for the scan on tuesday expecting maybe to be around the 7/7.5week mark and they only saw an empty sac measuring 5weeks 4 days. She said that it could be a miscarriage or foetus could not yet be visible but have to wait for another 2 weeks for another scan before we will know.

Feel like I am going out of my mind my emotions go up and down every minute. With the positive pregnancy test 4 weeks ago I am just expecting the worst!

Any words of wisdom/support/advice/experience would be greatly appreciated to try and get me through these 2 weeks!

Thankyou

@Rach2302 with a pregnancy test of four weeks ago. I would say that is a bit worrying. But miracles do happen. Fingers crossed for you.

Rach2302 · 12/10/2019 11:25

I know that's exactly what I am thinking, my boyfriend is telling me to be positive but it is hard when you add everything up! This limbo is just cruel just feel like I need to know so I can try to deal with it! Thanks I really am hoping for a miracle

Tashadream123 · 12/10/2019 11:35

Hi @rach2302 this is similar to what's happening to me. Had a 6 week scan could only see yolk sac no hb so around 5.5 weeks. Went back 2 weeks and 2 days later and seen a hb and measuring 6w3days but I'm sure on my dates and should be 8 and a half weeks.
It's so horrible waiting. I've convinced myslef there's something wrong.

rubyroot · 12/10/2019 11:46

I read previous post as empty sac and no yolk sac, that is the worrying thing. I had empty sac, but I was 9 weeks and certain of my dates. I was told to come back, but I knew it was over for me. How certain of your dates are you @Rach2302? At 5/6 weeks you would normally see a yolk sac even if no heartbeat x

Rach2302 · 12/10/2019 11:46

Its awful isn't it! So stressful! Maybe the dates being measured may be out as it sounds positive they saw a heartbeat! What did the sonographer say? When are you due your next scan? How long ago did you get your postive home pregnancy test?

Rach2302 · 12/10/2019 11:55

@rubyroot the sonographer just said that there was a sac but it was empty but didn't say anything about what they were looking for or if there was or wasn't a yolk sac. My periods were all over the place so dates could be off but my main concern is the fact of this positive test 4 weeks ago so I am convinced I should be more like 7/7.5 not 5.5! And obviously should be able to see alot more by that point too. So I am convinced it is bad news Sad

Tashadream123 · 12/10/2019 11:56

I got my positive on 6 August so about 4.5 weeks before the last scan, It was an early test tho but still have to be 7.5 at the very earliest. They didn't book me in again once they find a heartbeat they don't care abiyt dates she said, but I'm going to pay for a private in 2 weeks I think. The fact that in 2 weeks and 2 days the baby only developed about a week worries me so much. Hopefully in two weeks your scan will show you've caught up! It's just horrible waiting, try and distract yourself!

rubyroot · 12/10/2019 12:19

@Rach2302 I hope its good news for you, I really do. If its an ampty sac though without a yolk sac I would fear the worst. I don't mean to bring you down, but the absence of a yolk sac is not a good sign. I know of lots of people who have gone back and seen a heartbeat, but there's always been a yolk sac present previously. I still have my fingers crossed for you x

Rach2302 · 12/10/2019 12:35

Thankyou I need to be prepared for the worst I just wish it just didn't have to be a long 2 week wait :-(

That all sounds positive then Tasha hope everything is going well at your next scan I have read that sometimes the dating can be slightly off so you may end up nearer to what you thought. I have been trying to distract myself but it's hard as it is all that is on my mind Confused

Sizeofalentil · 12/10/2019 12:36

I've had tho happen twice: first is now a toddler and sitting next to me eating a boiled egg. The second, sadly, was a missed miscarriage, and the pregnancy ended at 10weeks.

m0therofdragons · 12/10/2019 12:38

Our 6week scan was an empty sac and "non viable pregnancy" that 10 days later when we went to have a scan to check I'd miscarried fully, turned into ID twins with 2 strong heartbeats. Early scans are very unreliable. Hope it works out for you opFlowers

Noneyerbuisness11234 · 12/10/2019 13:51

It happened to me I thought I was 12 weeks went for scan they couldn't find anything.
I went home done a test still positive so had to go to early pregnancy unit the following week they done an internal and everything was perfect but I was 4 weeks less than what I thought I've now a healthy 4 month old boy. It's the waiting and not knowing is the worst try and stay off google that put my head away even more.
Good luck
