Protein in wee

What does it mean? What could be wrong?

I had my 25 week appointment on Monday and showed protein in my urine so she has sent it off. She said not to be too concerned and just want to get it checked.

But she didn’t really tell me much at all, she had a trainee in and was talking to her about it mostly.

I was under a consultant for anxiety and this had just made me a little bit nervous. I wasn’t nervous at first until today I received a text asking for a repeat of the urine sample. I was hoping they’d just tell me all was fine.

Does anyone have any experience or similar stories as I have literally no idea what to prepare for or expect.

I hate not being in the know. I’d rather know what I’m looking at whether it’s good or bad, than not know at all :(

I forgot to mention there was something else being with ‘Z’ in my wee that can sometimes indicate infection. She asked if I had any symptoms of water infections and I haven’t in the slightest so assumed this would not be the cause.

Could be infection or even just some discharge that got into the sample

abbs1 · 08/10/2019 20:05

I know the z name your saying. I had that and got given anti biotics for 5 days to clear it for a uti. I'm not sure on the protein though. Hopefully someone else can help.
Try not to worry too much. Easier said than done.

7Worfs · 08/10/2019 20:05

I had protein several times due to UTI, needs monitoring and to be managed.
Don’t worry too much, just give samples regularly and ask about anything you are unsure of.

KMoKMo · 08/10/2019 20:08

Call your midwife in the morning and ask about it.
Did she not tell you what they were sending it off for? When will you get the results?

cushioncovers · 08/10/2019 20:09

Was the z word leucocytes?

DoubtingMyPatience · 08/10/2019 20:11

I don’t know she really didn’t say much at all. She just said they’d send it off as they was protein and ‘z-something’ that she just wants to double check, then asked me if I had any water infection symptoms. She then briefly said about preeclampsia and that if I get headaches or change in sight to come back right away. So I’m not sure if she more concerned about preeclampsia or an infection? I don’t want either the I hate taking tablets or medicine.

@cushioncovers actually that does ring a bell I think. I’m sure it was a Z but the ‘cytes ’ in leukocytes might just be throwing me off.

I used to dip urine as part of my job in antenatal clinic and the stick would show a
Ph balance
Glucose
Ketones
Leukocyte
Nitrates
Protein
Blood.

They are called a c7 testing stick.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 08/10/2019 20:17

Can be caused by bit driving enough.

DoubtingMyPatience · 08/10/2019 20:17

It was either ketones or leukocytes I think, both those words rings bells from when she was speaking to the trainee

Oh my fat fingers! ‘Not drinking enough’!

DoubtingMyPatience · 08/10/2019 20:18

By bit driving enough?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 08/10/2019 20:18

Is that supposed to say 'not drinking'

DoubtingMyPatience · 08/10/2019 20:19

😂😂😂 oooh ok, to be honest I go through itches of not drinking nearly enough water, easily go a full 12 hours without drinking anything at all.

I have started back on the water today though so hopefully when I go in for the repeated urine sample tomorrow morning it might Show a better result!

DoubtingMyPatience · 08/10/2019 20:20

I did wonder if the meant not driving enough, I was about to hop in the car for a night drive Grin

I had +++protein in mine a few weeks ago, turned out I had a urine infection. X

DoubtingMyPatience · 08/10/2019 20:24

@Shaunieh95 did you not have any symptoms either? I would half expect to be running back and fourth the toilet and have pain when weeing.

Shaunieh95 · 08/10/2019 20:46

No @DoubtingMyPatience I didn't have a clue! Usually I can feel them coming straight away x

abbs1 · 08/10/2019 20:48

@cushioncovers yes thats the name of it. My urine got sent off and it took 4 days for results as they have to "grow" the urine.

PowerslidePanda · 08/10/2019 21:06

I've had this several times in both pregnancies and it's always turned out to be nothing.

Bobojangles · 08/10/2019 21:09

I've also had it in both pregnancies and it was nothing (although both times i got UTIs post partum!)

thatwasMauijustmessingaround · 08/10/2019 21:11

I had ketones (protein) and was told it was probably just because it was early when I did the sample and I'd not eaten since the night before... plus I hadn't had enough to drink.

I had to repeat and all was ok

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 08/10/2019 21:29

See, told you, you need to drive more... 🚗

CloeDee · 09/10/2019 14:19

I am at risk of Pre-clampsia and those are the symptoms, protein in Wee, high blood pressure ect it could be many other things though just thought i'd share hope it helps and hope everything is k x
