Measuring 1 week behind in early pregnancy - What has the outcome been?

Hi ladies,

So I'm sure about my dates because we've been consultant led and had scans (had a missed miscarriage a few months ago). I should be 5+4 but the scan today showed 4+2 and just a sac.

Now just for a quick backstory, I've gone to the Dr for blood test to measure hcg levels after I got my BFP, first measurement was 67, and 4 days later 115 which was concerning. Dr wanted me to go back for another test 5 days later (this is 2 days ago) which gave the value of 728. This is a brilliant rise (I wasn't too hopeful about this test given the super slow rise earlier), it's more than doubled every 2 days. So she asked me to go in for a scan today to rule out ectopic - It's not which is a great relief. We didn't expect to see anything else than a sac today if not ectopic (and we did), but she said sac measured a week behind. I have to go back for a scan in 10 days.

Have anyone else been in this situation and what was the outcome? Dr told me it can go either way, but she has seen women whom have caught up when being behind. I'm hoping the quick hcg rise that has happened lately is a good sign, started out slow but will hopefully catch up?

Anyway, stories welcome while I'm waiting! I don't want to get my hopes up after a mmc (TTC our first).

I'm finding lots of stories about embryos catching up, but nothing about sac?

Sorry to clarify - I know exactly which day I've ovulated, so this is not a case of late ovulation!

At this stage everything is so small they could easily be slightly off with measurements - I've read that being up to 7 days behind at this stage is ok

I think they have given you the wrong information about what can be seen at 4+2 - I remember seeing a chart at the hospital last time I was there and it said at 4-5 weeks you wouldn't expect to see a sac just thickening of the lining and maybe a corpus luteus cyst. A sac wouldnt be seen until around 4.5 - 5 weeks (when hcg is over 1000) so I would say if they have seen a sac then your only a couple of days off your dates rather than a whole week

I didn't have any blood tests but had an early scan after a bleed at what we thought was 7+3 but was measured at 6+1. Had another scan a couple of weeks later and had gained a day before gaining another 3 days at 12 weeks. I'm now 21 weeks.
It is very much down to mm at this stage. I hope everything goes well for you.

I had 3 early scans and each time was further behind which really started to worry me. Just had the 12 week scan and dated ahead of my LMP dates. I wish I had properly appreciated how inaccurate early measurements are as it would have saved me a lot of worry. Good luck - I really sympathise with the anxiety x

Thanks ladies 😄 I'll just try to forget about it for a week, easier said than done 😘 I'm happy to hear it's worked out for you guys!

@Hall84 @janey15 were you sure about your ovulation dates? So it wasn't a case of potential late ovulation? Thanks :)

I was measuring a week behind at 8 week scan (well 5 days behind) and caught up to bang on 10 weeks by the 10 week scan. They have a margin of error of about 5 days on the system is what my doc told me. Good luck.

@SunStruck I had no clue when I ovulated. It was the cycle after an unsuccessful round of iui which always messes things up and we were about to start ivf so I had no hopes that month. It was the fact it got further behind that made me think it wasn't developing properly. We Had sex on day 12, 14 and 16 and the last measurements made it look like I conceived on day 20. Now it's dated as if it was day 12!
I just don't think it's that accurate. The sonography at 10 weeks said it also depends on the angle as she couldn't get a good view. I literally couldn't believe the 10 week blob dated 9 weeks turned into an actual 13 week baby two weeks later!
It's so early for you that it really could all be fine. There seems to be a huge variation in what they see that early - good luck xxx

If it helps at all its actually common for the measurements to be out so early on. My 1st scan I was 9 weeks exactly. My dating scan was suppose be at 12wk 4 when I went I was then measuring 13wk 1.. because baby hasn't formed properly so early it's hard for the measurements to be spot on xx

Hello, I’ve just come across your post as I’m in a similar situation. I was wondering what the outcome was? X

Anxmum22 · 15/01/2022 04:07

Hi @SunStruck
I came across the post and similar situation, wondering what was the outcome ?

SunStruck · 15/01/2022 06:31

Sorry just seen - it was a mc, blighted ovum unfortunately! I got pregnant 2 months after with my son ( now 15 months) and am now pregnant with number 2 at 14 weeks, all straight forward so hang in there!
