Boss has suspected whooping cough - should I tell work?

Hi all,

I'm 7 weeks pregnant and work doesn't know yet. My boss just informed us that she has suspected whooping cough. I know this can be very dangerous for babies but is it also dangerous in pregnancy at this stage?

Boss is obviously off and will stay off until well again. I'm still wondering if I should tell her to ensure she is extra careful and / or we are definitely not in the office together until all is clear.

Advice welcome!

I am not a doctor but reading through the NHS website I think you're ok, the people who are at risk are children or babies. It doesn't mention pregnant women.

You have the whooping cough injection during pregnancy so you can pass on the antibodies to your baby to help protect them for the first few weeks.

But if you are concerned, give your GP a ring and get a medical opinion! Please don't just take my word for it!!

Did you have a whooping cough vaccination when you were younger? If yes and you still have antibodies it’s not a problem. If no then you will usually take one After approx 16 weeks and so in your case I would definitely stay away

I caught whooping cough at about 6 months pg from someone at work. I was given ABs and coughed horrendously for about 2 months, but baby was fine.

It’s dangerous for babies after their born not whilst in the womb. If you caught it it would be unpleasant for you but ironically it would provide the immunity to your baby the later vaccine will!

Thank you all! I called midwife to be sure but am reassured all your answers that it is fine. Am glad I don't have to tell anyone at this stage!
