If you phone your GP, the receptionists will be able to tell you if you need a GP appointment for a referral to the midwives or if you can self refer. All areas are different. In my area you have a quick GP appointment to get approximate dates and they refer you on to the midwives. In lots of areas you don't need to see the GP first.

You can make the phone call at any time, and usually your first appointment with the midwife is at 8+ weeks, so as long as you give enough time for the referral to be done. In my area it's usually 10+ weeks. This is a long appointment going over your medical history, your family's and the father of the baby (if known) and his family. This is when you nornally get your notes and the referral is done for your 12 week scan which is usually done between 12 and 14 weeks. Congratulations

Congratulations!
Also important to start taking folic acid straight away - the pregnancy multi vits include it or you can take it on its own.

Thanks i have just bought folic acid as well :) i use it anyway for hypermobility issues.
