Drinking/Smoking unknowingly while pregnant

Hello Mums and Papas. Some background: I recently just got married and went on my honeymoon. I am in my early 30's and was not planning on waiting long for babies but I also read my chances of becoming pregnant aren't that high for first time pregnancy. So we had some fun on our honeymoon thinking it wouldn't really happen. Nevertheless, here I am getting pregnant the first time we tried. I count my blessings on my fertility.

A few weeks later after I got back from the honeymoon, I got my early period symptoms and cramping - tender breasts and all so naturally assumed I was getting my period any day. They were so consistent with my usual period symptoms for me to think otherwise. I lived my life as usual - drinking on the weekends (had a few birthday parties so drank more than usual). I also smoked marijuana and the Juul (e-cig that contains nicotine).

My period was late by one week and that's when I researched early pregnancy symptoms to realize that is what I could have been experiencing rather than early period symptoms. I took a pregnancy test and found out the good / a bit unexpected news. Most of my friends with babies had been trying for at least a couple of months so I just really did not think it would happen that fast.

Anyway, of course I stopped it all after finding out but reading some articles I am leaning it's really important to avoid above type activities during the first 8 weeks especially. My doctor said i was 6 weeks along so now I am concerned about the prior weeks I spent indulging in, well you know.

I would love and greatly appreciate personal advice from experienced moms in similar situations and see how much it will effect my baby's development according to their experiences. I feel like I shouldn't worry - I know I should - but I can't help it. I don't want to tell all my friends and family just yet so I would love advice from you mumsnetters. Thank you

The embryo doesn't implant until around the time you miss your period. It is not connected to your bloodstream until then do don't worry.

Congratulations Smile

Congratulations op. I, along with many, many women I know, drank whilst newly and unknowingly pregnant. I took a pregnancy test because I had a hangover that was entirely disproportionate to the wine I had had the night before.

You'll be fine! I was 10 weeks before i found out i was pregnant and i was drinking quite heavily beforehand most weekends but my midwife assured me no damage will be done at that stage and it wasn't my baby is totally healthy and fine

I smoked and drank when I was pregnant (found out when I was 6 weeks) but I had no idea! Stopped as soon as I fount out and I'm now 22 weeks pregnant with a healthy baby, its hard not to but I wouldn't worry it happens to so many women x

Congratulations!!!
Many women dont realise they're pregnant for weeks... even months! Don't stress.

I went to my sister's for her birthday for the weekend and done alot of drinking etc.. came home and carried on weekend after weekend (like normal, social drinking and enjoying nights out!) To then find out I was pregnant!! I thought it was a water infection lol So I was very suprised.

I had a perfect pregnancy and my son is almost 5. Perfect happy baby.

Enjoy the pregnancy Flowers

You will be absolutely fine. You stopped drinking/smoking early on and frankly that is what most people do. Think back to days gone by when women regularly drank moderately and smoked throughout pregnancy and had perfectly normal babies.

Many congratulations! What wonderful news.

I found out I was expecting at 16 weeks with my first. I certain wasn’t living like a woman who was growing a baby! And that baby has just started school. These things happen and the important thing is that you’re taking great care now. Wishing you all the best!
