12 week scan (Can’t see arms)

Hi All,

I realise that this is going to make me sound like.. well you’ll see what I mean!

I am just back from my 12 week scan, scan went well (very happy sonographer) but on looking at/obsessing over the scan I realised that I can’t see any arms? Surely my sonographer would have mentioned this?

Some 12 week scans look super clear so I’m just a little worried/ neurotic.

Any thoughts would be very much appreciated. And please feel free to judge my obsessive paranoia!!! 🙈

Thank you!

If the arms were out of focus when the picture was taken you wont see them. They would have told you if there was a problem.

Of course they would have told you if they didn’t have arms! Do you really think this is a detail they would have somehow missed?

I couldn't see the arms at my 12 week scan either but they were visible at the 20 week scan. It's probably just the position your baby was in during the scan, the image quality varies massively for different people but the sonographers know what they're looking for so try not to worry or obsess too much.

Sorry, I did say it was silly and neurotic. Was just looking for reassurance!

Yes if there was an issue the sonographer would have definitely raised it with you!! That’s what they’re trained for - to make sense out of the random fuzz on the screen! Smile

No arms on mind either.. you never arms on the side of photos! Have a google of 12 weeks scans or search through gender guess threads on here!

My first pregnancy, I had such a grumpy sonographer who explained nothing but this time, mine was fantastic. She talked me through everything they were looking at & checking, right down to pointing out the left over ‘thing’ (I forget the name) in my right ovary from where I ovulated! They are doing a full check of the foetus, they checked they could see both femur bones, both hands, arms, nose, brain..

Don’t worry Smile

They don't really have arm bones at that point because they aren't properly formed yet so you won't see them very easily.

But also, what you see with ultrasound is a cross section. Imagine that they made a 3D model of your baby, then sliced it into paper thin sections. Each image you see is one of those paper thin sections. When you can see the nose, jaw, heart etc you won't see arms as well because they won't be part of the same segment as they are at the sides of the body rather than the middle.
