6 week scan, abnormal sac shape

Hi

I’m currently around 6 weeks pregnant and am just back from an early scan due to ongoing cramping and very slight bleeding this morning.

They couldn’t detect a heartbeat and the foetus is measuring slightly smaller than expected so I’ve been told to expect the worst but return next week for a second scan.

They also said the sac was not the nice round shape it should be and that this is another reason that miscarriage is likely. If, when I go back for my second scan, the baby is growing as it should, does anyone know what the mis-shapen sac could indicate? I asked and they said if that happened they’d just scan me again to keep an eye on things, but I don’t know what if an odd-shaped sac means for the baby.

Any advice appreciated.
Thanks!

hi there I'm in exactly the same position. Had a scan last weds they said everything was measuring fine and heartbeat was seen etc but that my gestational sac was slightly irregular and I have to go back in 2 weeks for another scan. Everything I seem to find online isn't great and I have already had 3 miscarriages this year the first one I had a missed miscarriage and found out at my 12 week scan that baby ad died at 10 weeks had to have d and c and then had 2 chemicals and now this one. Any update or info you have found or anyone that has any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks and good luck with your pregnancy xx

Hi

Sorry to hear you’re going through this too. I also had a silent miscarriage and found out at my 12 week scan (earlier this year). Medical management didn’t work so I had to go to surgery. It must be really hard for you going through so much in a short space of time - miscarriage has probably been the hardest thing I’ve experienced so be sure to look after yourself.

I’ll update you about my situation but please remember everybody is different (and you have had a more hopeful scan than me). I went for a scan last Wed due to ongoing pains and the start of brownish bleeding - they said the baby was measuring about 5 weeks 5 days when it should have be 6 weeks plus (I held onto hope that this didn’t matter as I couldn’t be that accurate about dates). However, they seemed certain it was bad news due to the sac shape and no heartbeat. The nurses said they should really wait at least 10 days to rescan but left the room to discuss and said it would be unfair to leave me waiting so long so gave me another scan appointment for a week’s time (which is tomorrow). They also told me to prepare for the worst so they clearly knew the outcome but, as they said, “protocol” meant they couldn’t go ahead with advising to abort. I’ve since had a small amount of proper bleeding, feel exhausted and am having more cramps in my stomach, back and legs so am prepared for the outcome tomorrow.

I did read loads last week, looking for some hope in other people’s stories, and did find some stories similar to yours where the sac seemed to mend itself by the next scan. I also read an article which explained why they have to rescan in situations like ours - a small amount of pregnancies will go on to be healthy. I’m no expert and this is just my internet browsing so sources may be unreliable! I suppose it’s nice to have some
hope to cling onto during a difficult wait.

I hope all goes well and that you go on to have a healthy pregnancy.

Xx

It was bad news as expected. Thankfully it happened naturally so no need for further treatment. I hope all goes well at your scan, fingers crossed xxx
