Empty sac at early scan, missed miscarriage?

Hello 👋
I found out I was pregnant 9 days ago after being around 11 days late for my period. My LMP was 2 August (which would make me 7+2) but I took the morning after pill on the 13 August so am pretty sure my ovulation date would have been delayed. This morning when I woke up I had some mild cramping and a small amount of brown discharge (no blood) in the toilet. I went to a private ultrasound clinic today and the Sonographer did an ultrasound and a transvaginal exam. He didn’t seem to know much but told me that he could only see the gestational sac but no pole, yolk or HB. He told me to get a second opinion from the NHS but he was pretty sure that the pregnancy wasn’t viable. I am still getting pregnancy symptoms and my latest clear blue test said I was 3+ weeks so my HCG levels are good. I’m trying to be hopeful as I have read old threads where women have experienced a similar issue which resulted in them having their dates wrong and a HB being detected after a few more weeks but I can’t help worrying that the embryo isn’t developing and I will miscarry. Sorry for rambling I guess the questions I am asking are:

Can the morning after pill affect ovulation dates dramatically?

How long should I wait to have another scan?

How long does it usually take to start bleeding if the pregnancy isn’t viable?

Thanks all for your help and advice
Really trying to stay positive as this will be DC number 4 but first with my new partner. Also I am 43 which I know puts me at high risk of miscarriage
Xx

Are you wanting to be pregnant as you took the morning after pill?

ThePhoenixRises · 22/09/2019 17:38

Bit confused, are you saying the morning after pill did not work?

Mystie · 22/09/2019 17:41

Thanks for reply, I did take the morning after pill but after finding out we were pregnant my partner and I decided that we definitely didn’t want to abort and we are now excited at the prospect of having a baby together.

I think we probably conceived within the 2 weeks after I took the morning after pill when I assumed I was not ovulating based on my MC. Which is why I think I may not be as far along as I think if morning after pill delayed ovulation

I have had several of these unfortunately, they are called blighted ovum.
My experience was very strong pregnancy symptoms and a positive pregnancy test up to 4 weeks after the miscarriage was complete.

One time I knew about the empty sac at 7 weeks but did not miscarry until 13 weeks as I decided to let nature take its course.
I continued to feel very very pregnant throughout those long weeks of waiting.

It is a cruel and distressing miscarriage.
I bled pretty much continuously and had pain too.
They recommend that I had a repeat scan after 7-10 days. Really it was to ensure it had all gone.
Sorry you are going through this, it’s awful.

This isnt good outcome so dont read if you dont want to know.

I had my 3rd consecutive miscarriage yesterday. I had a scan at 6 weeks3 days and they said empty sac come back in two weeks. Went back and very positive pregnancy tests/hcg levels and had another scan. Said it was inconclusive and to go back in another week which would have been tomorrow. I started miscarrying yesterday so it took 3.5 weeks from first scan empty sac until the miscarriage. I'm wishing for you that it isnt the case for you but the hope screwed with my mind and I wish I had known sooner. Although they wouldn't operate or give me pills as it would be classed as a termination. Wishing your story is different to mine

dalmatianmad · 22/09/2019 17:54

You took the MAP and now changed your mind? I'm really confused

bee222 · 22/09/2019 17:54

I am currently going through my second missed miscarriage this year. I found out at a private scan this time round but the NHS needed to confirm it themselves. They need to scan you and will then scan you again a week or 10 days later, so it's best just to get the first NHS scan done as soon as possible.

With regards to bleeding - you may not bleed at all. I didn't bleed with both of my MMC. I had surgery at 8 weeks first time round, and i'm currently 11 weeks with no bleeding or any sign of miscarrying naturally yet (scheduled for surgery on Saturday)

It's pointless taking pregnancy tests because they can't tell you if a pregnancy is viable. With a MMC your HCG can continue to be high. I was getting positive pregnancy 6 weeks after my first ERPC.

Thank you disconnecteddrifter and crosser62 for your personal accounts, I think I know in my heart of hearts that this pregnancy is over but having had 3 healthy children and no MC in the past I guess I am being optimistic. I really really don’t want to wait for weeks for this to be over We’re you offered a D & C at any point? How long after your miscarriage did you start TTC again?

Hi. I have two lovely boys who I am extremely grateful for. I have had all the tests and it us unexplained. For the anembryonic pregnancy (just a sac) they wouldn't give me d and c or pills until the sac was a certain size or until the sac stopped growing so it can really be a waiting game. I think she said they could do an operation but it would be termed a termination instead of a miscarriage. For the other losses, one at 10 weeks but found out at 12 weeks and one at 6 weeks I had the operation as there was previously a heart beat and it stopped. But keep pushing for answers

Thank you! Had a conversation with very helpful clinician from NHS direct today and will be heading over to early pregnant unit at hospital tomorrow morning. Hopefully I won’t be in limbo for too long . I am also grateful to be mum three wonderful children 18, 12 and 11 x

GOOD NEWS! (For now)

Went to the early pregnancy unit today and the scan revealed that I am only around 5w 1d so would not be far enough to necessarily see a yolk sac or pole. After being 99% sure this pregnancy was over having the hope that it could be viable is such a great feeling (despite being extremely cautious!) I have to go back in 2 weeks time for a second scan when hopefully there will be a HB.

The long wait begins now .... 🤞🏼
