Early scan taking your date back 2 weeks?

Hi guys,

I had an early scan this morning and it's made me feel worse 😭. I thought I was 8 weeks as I was tracking my ovulation and I know I ovulated on either the 8th or 9th of August and I got a positive pregnancy test on the 20th. My last period was the 26th of July.

I went for the scan this morning and she said everything looks fine and there's a heartbeat but I'm only 6 weeks not 8? I can't understand how the dates can be 2 weeks out and now I'm worried something is wrong.

Has anyone had this happen and gone on to have a healthy baby?

Thanks x

I've heard loads of people get given due dates that were out from what they had calculated. I think especially so early on it can be hard to get exact measurements, was it a private scan?

If you were 8 weeks and the baby measured 6 weeks it would be obviously unviable with a faint to non-existant heartbeat. That the embryo has a strong heartbeat suggests your dates are wrong, but these things can depend on the quality of the machinery used. I am more likely to believe a private transvaginal scan at this early stage than a NHS one as the former uses better machinary.

@LA89 Oh love! I remember you from the tww thread. I was put back 10 days with DD. so it's possible to be put back quite a bit! When is your next scan booked? As my early scan was NHS it was put back as my official due date. Xx

This happened me too, , I got an early private scan as hospital doesn’t scan till 12 weeks , I thought I was 8 and she said I was more likely 6 , I then had my scan in the hospital , and it changed again to the the exact dates I had worked out from my cycle

Try not to worry (I know that's easier said) scans are estimates and your baby is so so tiny a very slight change in where they take the measurements can make a big difference. She said there is a heartbeat, that's fantastic! That's one big positive. When you get your 12 week scan it will be more accurate. If you are worried talk to your doctor or midwife, they may offer you a early scan. Xx

Thanks guys! The little heart was beating nicely it was clear to see. I've gone a lot of googling and come across lots of women saying they have had early scans and been told they're a lot behind what they though only to then go to the 12 well scan and their original due date turns out to be correct. I suppose things are so tiny at this stage a small miscalculation would mean a big difference. I'm seeing the midwife on Wednesday so will speak to her then and see what she thinks. I might book another scan at a different private clinic in 2 weeks if it's playing on my mind xxx

Me! I’m now approaching 30 weeks and all is well. I was googling every single forum I could find after my early scan took me back two works and my CRL was tiny but with a heartbeat also. All you read online is mainly horror stories and bad news so steer clear. X

My dates put me at a due date of 3rd November. My 12 week scan dated me as the 13th. He came out on the 2nd, supposedly 38+3 Hmm
