Hiya I recently had my 14 weeks scan and asked the Sonographer if she could tell the gender of baby.she had a look and said it’s hard to tell cos legs are crossed but after a struggle looking she said she can guess n it’s 70% girl but find out on 20 weeks..how accurate can they be..has anyone experienced this before.

I'm a sonographer. Was this your 12 week scan?
It's not accurate at all at 12/14weeks. Wait till your 20 week scan. The scans are to check the progress and health of your baby not to give you an indication of the sex. That is only a bonus if it is possible to see.

Most people have 12 week scans and it’s too early to tell by that point.. privately, you can get gender scans from 16 weeks. No earlier. The reasoning is boy & girl anatomy looks surprisingly similar when it’s forming and only settles into a definitive penis or labia a little later on. By 14 weeks, you might get an OK shot at telling, I’m guessing there were no protruding areas that the sonographer could see.. but given baby had its legs crossed too.. I’d remain cautious until a scan a bit later on!

Thanks for your advice, I really appreciate it. I will wait for my 20 weeks scan before doing any Shopping.
