Tomato addiction

I'm currently 8 weeks pregnant and since Monday I've had a really bad craving for tomatoes, anything tomato related last night I was drinking tomato juice like it was going out of fashion I'm the same with orange juice too I can't seem to get enough of it. I had my booking appointment on Wednesday and had a blood test. Has anybody actually been so obsessed and found out there iron levels are low or something? Or is it just a strange craving I've got? Thanks ladies x

At least it’s healthy! I keep thinking about curry pot noodles or curry super noodle type things

tomato juice can be high in salt.
other than that - it's totally fine.

Gumbo · 20/09/2019 12:51

This was me! I used to pop out of work at lunchtime to go to the little market in the town where I worked and buy a ouple of punnets of cherry tomatoes... one for lunchtime, the other for the drive home Grin . Every day until I went on mat leave.

And yes, my baby was - and still is - obsessed with tomatoes, I struggle to believe it's not related.

FearnRJ · 20/09/2019 12:58

@Gumbo I went into Iceland yesterday and they didn't have any tomato juice so I went straight to Morrison's after work and opened the carton as soon as I got back in the car i had been craving it all day. I'm not usually a fan of tomatoes but at the minute I can't stop!

Like people have said at least it's a healthy craving 🤣🤣
Will be good to see if the baby actually does like tomatoes!

That... or you turn red !!!

My midwife has just phoned me my blood have come back fine but got to send another urine sample in as I could have the start of a urine infection or thrush which I do suffer from now and again so they want to test it again. Apparently they are both common in pregnancy x

I was the same, tomatoes and pickles! I didn't like fresh tomatoes at all before I got pregnant. DD is 19mo now and I still love them.

Teddybear45 · 20/09/2019 16:05

Tomato juice is really salty so I wouldn’t have it too often. Try to have orange juice or fresh tomatoes when you can

sodrained · 20/09/2019 17:04

Love this my craving is tinned tomato's with two slices of toasted warburtons toastier bread with lots of butter, and a sprinkle of salt. I use the whole tin and all the juice I love it. My partner tried to make it for me the other day he put in on the toast and it went all soggy and shit I was so upset. Hormones eh Grin

ronniemipperton · 20/09/2019 18:29

My top tip: Big Tom spiced tomato mix. I’m drinking some right now. It’s delicious.

FearnRJ · 20/09/2019 19:04

@sodrained tinned tomatoes..... yummy! Think I'll have to get some.

I did used to like tomatoes before I was pregnant but not like this and I would never have thought to drink tomato juice before I was pregnant 🤣🤣 x

@ronniemipperton I've just googled it. I think I'll be trying some of that!

@FearnRJ honestly it's so good! And I'm like this now I've never ever wanted to try tomato juice now I'm wondering if I should try it but I don't think I'd like it cold x

MitziK · 20/09/2019 19:40

To make proper tomatoes on toast, you make sure the bread is toasted until a deep brown - no pasty, floppy singed bits of bread - and crispy. Add thick bits of butter, ensuring you get unmelted lumps on the crusts. Once your tomatoes are piping hot, pierce them with the side of a fork and quickly place upon the plate alongside but not upon your toast cut into triangles, which are kept aloof and dry. Add freshly ground black pepper and sea salt flakes.

You then eat the tomatoes with a fork, adding a bit to each bite of your lovely, crispy, buttery toast.

And probably drink the juice afterwards. You'd probably enjoy a Virgin Mary drink, too. Much nicer than sugary stuff.

Chillisauceboss · 20/09/2019 19:41

I was tomatoes!!!!! Tomatoes on toast from a tin or fresh covered in garlic and oil!!

Totally obsessed with them!

FearnRJ · 20/09/2019 20:07

I feel so much better now knowing it's not just me 🤣🤣 thanks for all these ideas I'll definitely be trying them!

Be careful of having tooooo much or you might end up with gastritis. Horrible stomach condition caused by too much acid. Tomatoes are a big trigger.

I was obsessed with milkshakes in my second pregnancy. I drank litres of them and still love them!

ChampooPapi · 20/09/2019 21:35

@FearnRJ I honestly thought you were going on to say 'they tested my blood and it came back as pure tomato juice' Grin

FearnRJ · 20/09/2019 21:36

@ChampooPapi 🤣🤣🤣 I'm surprised it didn't x

At least you won't get constipated.

ChampooPapi · 20/09/2019 21:47

@FearnRJ pregnancy does make one completely fiendish when it comes to certain things, mine was trebore mints which I stashed absolutely everywhere & anywhere, so I could always access my fix 😂

sodrained · 21/09/2019 10:27

@FearnRJ I might try it with my son my craving was the smell of Harpic black toilet cleaner! I went through four bottles a week just cleaning the toilet, now I know I was low on iron back then Grin
