I'm 33 weeks +6 the midwife has said I'm 1/5 engaged what does this mean ... They have said the baby is large . Will I be going into labor anytime soon ?

It basically means 1/5 of the head is in position but the rest is not.

It doesn't mean labour is imminent as it can take a while for the rest to get in position. Just means the baby is preparing its exit

It means baby head is in position

When baby is 5/5 engaged it means baby is in the optimal position for labour, but even then it doesn't necessarily mean labour is imminent. It can take a long time for baby to become fully engaged.

At 28 weeks I was 2/5 engaged and at 31 weeks 3/5 engaged. I really wouldn't read much into it

With DS1 I was 4/5 engaged fairly early on ... he was 2 weeks bloody late! Very frustrating. Means they're head is engaged in your pelvis optimum position for labour not doesn't actually mean you'll go into labour.

They can also move in and out of being engaged. Although my midwife said with first babies your pelvis is still a bit tighter so they often stay put but once you've had a baby and it's all lose in there they just slip in and out Hmm

It's actually the other way round- 5/5 engaged means baby is free. 1/5 engaged means they are very low down!

TequilaMockingbird0 · 17/09/2019 09:50

@Jollitwiglet 5/5 engaged is actually baby not engaged at all! 1/5 is the most engaged and optimal for labour.

@TequilaMockingbird0 you’re right with the numbers, but the way they usually describe it is “x/5 palpable” so if 1/5 is palpable they can only feel 1/5 of the head and the rest is engaged in the pelvis and they can’t feel it.

Jollitwiglet · 17/09/2019 13:13

Must be different in different areas then. My midwife told me 5/5 palpable is when they're not engaged at all because they can feel the whole head. 5/5 engaged is when they're fully engaged
