Hi,

So I had some soreness down below (mainly when dehydrated) thought to be safe I would drop anytime sample to the doctor, first sample when I had drunk almost a litre came back clear, but doctor asked me to do another 2 days later.
I drop 2nd sample off today, first thing in the morning so I hadn't actually drunk anything at that point.

I had a call this afternoon to say that traces of ketones and protein had been found in my urine and as I'm 10 weeks pregnant they wanted me to go to a&e for more testing.
After waiting ages, I had my bloods done and another urine sample. This sample was clear of protein and ketones, however did contain leucocytes.
Based on this I have been given a weeks antibiotics, I have been assured they are pregnancy friendly. But I'm a bit concerned that I haven't actually been checked to see if I do have an infection, could this be nothing? Should a sample have been sent to a lab before prescribing antibiotics?
Would taking these antibiotics with no infection present cause an issue?

I'm probably worrying over nothing again

I have this and my urine was sent to the lab first to confirm before I was given antibiotics even though the EPU found the stuff in my urine. I had to wait four days and then went in for fluids and that's when they gave me the antibiotics. Still feel really poorly 5 days on from taking them as I didn't even know I had it but hope its cleared the infection.

Drs can normally tell just from testing urine if there’s traces of utis - I have reoccurring utis and am on antibiotics as a preventative- as long as they have given you pregnancy safe ones you will be absolutely fine.

I had leukocytes twice during my most recent pregnancy but no symptoms, was put on ABs both times (I think they were called nitrofurantoin or something like that?), these are standard ABs for use during pregnancy. Only issue is they make your pee bright yellow! If you have the opportunity to speak to your GP or MW if you’re worried then I’m sure they can reassure you, but taking ABs (as well as all sorts of other meds) is quite common in pregnancy and there will be lots of safety data. You can look up whatever they’ve prescribed you on the BUMPS website which will give more info on their use in pregnancy. Hope it clears up soon!

thank you guys so so much! I have been prescribed nitrofurantoin, was more worried about being prescribed it and it not being needed.
This is calmed me down massivley! Xx

Leukocytes are only present when there is an infection. That's why they have prescribed you antibiotics. You do have a urine infection. (I'm a nurse)
