Black Vomit

Hi I'm 24 weeks I've been feeling rough all throughout and wondered if I'm low on iron maybe, was sick last night it was normal, took an iron tablet this morning and was sick two hours later it's jet black and stinks like battery acid. I'm guessing it's the iron tablet that's turned it black but why? I feel absolutely awful

You can't be sure that it's the iron tablet that caused the black vomit. You should call your GP or 111 asap as it could be blood. You can't take any risks, especially in pregnancy.

Angelinthenightx · 13/09/2019 12:56

I agree phone for advice they will want to check u over.

MrsEricBana · 13/09/2019 12:57

Yep definitely ring 111. Could be blood. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Gustavo1 · 13/09/2019 12:58

I think it’s very likely to be the iron tablet. Iron supplements turn poop very dark too. I had a scare last week when I thought I had blood in my urine. Then remembered the previous day I had eaten a huge amount of pickled beetroot! Blush

It is worth calling the midwife if you’re concerned. A blood test can confirm your iron levels so you aren’t taking supplements unnecessarily.

Good luck Smile

100% needs to be checked. Black vomit or stools can be blood.

sodrained · 13/09/2019 13:10

I'll give them a call it's my birthday today too last thing I want is to sit up there but I googled it and it looked like the black coffee ground thing they say which has now terrified me. I don't know why I do it to myself honestly bloody google

Why are we advising 111 when the GP surgery is open?

OP it's highly likely to be the iron tablet. However if you have concerns then either call the GP surgery or your community midwife for advice.

Do not call 111.... it's not out of hours Hmm

sodrained · 13/09/2019 13:18

Our GP doesn't do same day appointment and would just refer to you midwife anyway same as 111 would do I'm guessing and you can't phone the doctors and speak to a GP the next appointment available for a GP is the 1st of October.

If you can't get a same day GP appointment, phone up the midwives at your local hospital

DustyDoorframes · 13/09/2019 13:41

111 is not just for out of hours. Ring them, your MW will want a doc's opinion anyway. I'd imagine 111 are likely to send you to A&E as they will be cautious of dismissing a pregnant woman.
Poor you! Not much fun for a birthday!

paniquer · 13/09/2019 14:55

The iron oxygenated. Try a ferrous sulphate rather than ferrous fumerate. Its gentler on the stomach.

Angelinthenightx · 13/09/2019 17:31

Gp's do give out same day appointments when needed esp since u are pregnant the hospital would see u too.

Wiltshirelass2019 · 13/09/2019 19:29

I had black vomit taking iron tablets. Still consult your GP though x

Rubberyduck · 13/09/2019 19:40

I was warned about this when I was prescribed iron tabs this week, but I have no idea if yours are the same so I would defo be cautious and check with a professional. I hope all is OK

Hazza000 · 13/09/2019 19:42

Hi
If vomit is dark and resembles coffee grounds can be indicative of a possible gastric bleed I'd see your GP ...

DustyDoorframes · 13/09/2019 19:50

@sodrained hope you are ok! What did you do? Hopefully it was just the iron.

Nogodsnomasters · 13/09/2019 19:56

Hope you got seen to op and that your OK. Happy birthday!

sodrained · 14/09/2019 14:45

Hello everyone thanks for the birthday wishes spoke to Gp didn't sound too bothered didn't even ask me to come in, just said they think it's the iron tablets as the night before when I was sick it was normal. I feel fine in myself now but I don't think I'll take them again for now

Great news op. If you do need extra iron. You can buy sachets of something called spatone. You mix with oh and drink it. No tablets to dissolve so easier on the tummy.

DustyDoorframes · 15/09/2019 09:48

@sodrained v glad the GP wasn't worried and you feel better!
Spatone has a LOT less iron than tablets, so won't sort your anemia though...
