Spotting During Early Pregnancy

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to get some advice. I found out I was pregnant around a week ago and from the following day I’ve basically had spotting. It started as a very pale pink only when I wiped and turned to a brownish colour which I’ve had ever since.

I had a miscarriage at the end of October last year and another at the end of May this year, both around 5 1/2 weeks. I know the brown spotting was how my last 2 started, but normally by this stage the heavy bleeding would have started and my pregnancy symptoms would have left but I currently still have symptoms.

My last period was the 28/07/2019 but I didn’t ovulate until the 15/08/2019. Can this be old implantation bleeding or is that just wishful thinking? I have a doctors appointment tomorrow and a scan booked for next week in the EPU.

Sorry for the long post I’m just wrecking my brain between trying to be positive and then holding on to no hope. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

@4Doylers
I know everyone is didnt but i wanted to tell u whats been happening with me, it might help u a bit. I am currently 10 weeks and 3 days, at 6 weeks and 2 days i started getting brown blooding discharge, i went in to my dr the next day she said it was old blood maybe from implantation. I had this a few times a day everyday for the next week, then i rang the hospital Wednesday as i was starting to worry badly, i had a missed miscarriage in April so i was over worried about everything. Anyway the hospital told me to come straight in so i rang hubby at work he came home and took me down, they did an abdominal scan, i held my breathe waiting an then there it was a little bolb and a tiny heart beat i was 7w 3d at that scan, went home all happy that evening gushed bright red bleed on of off until 2 am then nothing on Thursday, Friday morning bleeding started again so rang hospital, hubby all again went down had an internal scan convinced there was going to be nothing after all the bleeding, but there it was again little heat beating away. They thought it could have been something to do with the placenta as mine seems to be quite low which it was with my daughter too, and the blood was brown due to taking ages to come out then the scan pushed it and it all came out, anyway fast forward to just over 2 weeks later with odd bits of brown spotting on an off and i had another scan yesterday at 10w 2d and all is perfect baba has got huge compared to b4 is really looking more like a baby now heart was beating away and little arms were waving around. I still wirry over every little thing but im trying not too, everyone keeps saying relax but thats easier said than done trust me. Get your self some rest and if it keeps up ring the hospital u plan in going to and juat explain it to them and see what they say. Good luck and im crossing my fingers for u. Let me know how u get on. Xx

@Loti92 thank you for replying and congratulations!
It is so worrying I feel like I’ve been through it all at this point. This will be my 5th pregnancy with my first being a MMC and resulting in a D&C.
I then went on to have my beautiful Son who is 5 now. I never had any spotting with him not even implantation bleeding. The only experience I have had when it came to this brown spotting has never been good.
I hope and pray this time it’s different I really don’t want to go through it all again!
Good luck for you scan tomorrow I’m sure baby will be perfect! Let me know how it goes and thank you! I’ll keep you posted x

@LucyDev18
Hello Lucy thank you for replying and congratulations to you as well! God that sounds awful I’m sure you were so afraid. That’s brilliant news I’m so glad everything is ok!
I’m hoping that’s the case this time and everything turns out fine. Tbh I’m fed up of going to the EPC for them to tell me bad news which I already knew, I’m hoping this time it’s different.
I’ve wrecked my brain trying to think of other things that could cause it even thinking it could be something to do with my scar from my caesarian.
I’ve had 5 pregnancies in total I had a MMC before I had my Son who is 5 now and I’m hoping this one sticks too!
My appointment is for 9.30am next Thur so I don’t have long to wait just praying there’s no heavy bleeding before then.
Thank you! Good luck for your next scan and let me know how it goes. I’ll be on to update on Thur x

LucyDev18 · 04/09/2019 21:09

@RachaelMD02 i will be thinking of u. I had my daughter when i was quite young she is 19 now, but i had no problems until i bled the morning b4 she was born which was to do with the low placenta, other than kidney infections which are liked to a misshapen kidney i had no problems at all i was nearly 11 weeks b4 i even found out, no sickness no anything, then i had no pregnancies until this yr, which unfortunately ended in mmc, but this time ive had everything possible so far worst sickness and nausea ever worse than i thought even possible and then the bleeding but i just kerp saying sickness is a good sign and ive had 3 dcans altogether now and baby was very happy with a good in all so its something silly and i need to calm down for my own sake. Looking forward to hearing from u, try not to worry easier said than done i know.

Avvii · 04/09/2019 21:11

I had brown spotting almost daily between 7-9 weeks, and then intermittently until I was 13 weeks. Currently 21 weeks and baby is kicking away as I type! The EPU said it was old blood, either from implantation or my previous miscarriage (had no period in-between this and current pregnancy) and not to worry. I know it must be a really stressful time but, as they kept telling me, brown is fine. All the best for an uneventful pregnancy and I hope the spotting stops soon to put your mind at rest!

Kindlethefourth · 04/09/2019 23:08

I had brown spotting at around the 6 week mark. It stopped. She is 13 now.

RachaelMD02 · 05/09/2019 09:48

@LucyDev18
Thank you 😊. That’s really scary! I don’t think we as Mothers ever stop worrying even when they’re in our arms we just move on to the next worry.
It’s a really good sign that you have your symptoms I’ve always known something is wrong first by the lightness of my positive line and when I’ve woken with no symptoms. I still have symptoms so far so I’m thankful they give me peace of mind.
Your lo will be fine honestly if you’re having all the symptoms and you’ve had 3 scans so far and seen the heartbeat things will be perfect. It’s so much easier said than done to relax. I wish I could give myself the same advice but I know the worry. You’ll be out of your first trimester in no time and I hope all the worrying leaves you then x

RachaelMD02 · 05/09/2019 09:59

@Avvii
Hi Avvii, thank you for replying! Awk that’s brilliant congratulations! It’s so good to hear that other people have went through this and everything has been fine.
I’m still spotting today and really hoping it tails off by Thur and I can get some answers of what’s causing it. It really could be anything at this point.
My other miscarriages started this way but then quickly became bright red. I’ve had this spotting for quite a few days now and it’s stayed brown so that’s a good sign.
Thank you Thur can’t come quick enough lol x

RachaelMD02 · 05/09/2019 10:01

@Kindlethefourth
Hello, that’s great news! I’ve everything crossed it’s nothing 🤞🏻. Did you ever get an explanation of what caused the spotting? x

LucyDev18 · 05/09/2019 10:18

@RachaelMD02 we dont ever stop worrying ur right it just changes to a different worry, my dd is 19 an still i worry

RachaelMD02 · 11/09/2019 16:49

Hey everyone just thought I'd update. The spotting got heavier and turned a darker colour. It was still brown though.
I woke this morning with a sharp pain in my right shoulder so the EPC seen me today. From what they can see it looks like another miscarriage is about to happen and my HCG levels are confirming that too.
Thank you's for your opinions they gave me hope when I really needed it even though it's not the outcome I wanted.
Fingers crossed next time it's a different outcome! Good luck to yous all 😊 x

LucyDev18 · 11/09/2019 17:32

@RachaelMD02 im so sorry to hear this, im thinking of u. Huge amounts of hugs to u

Letseatgrandma · 11/09/2019 17:37

It could be normal, it could be a miscarriage. I have been pregnant 5 times and had bleeding during all five-two were miscarriages and 3 were healthy babies-people told me during the miscarriage it was probably fine, and it wasn’t.

Try not to worry and try not to think about it until the scan as nothing anyone says will probably help.

LucyDev18 · 08/10/2019 23:11

@RachaelMD02 how are you? I was thinking of u earlier. I hope ur doing ok

RachaelMD02 · 09/10/2019 13:48

@LucyDev18 I'm not too bad thank you for checking in on me, just trying to keep busy how are you? How did your scan go? I took a test last week which was still coming back positive though it could have been early still. Going to take another today I'm just torn between so I wait the 3 months to get tested to see what's causing the miscarriages or try again I'm really unsure xO

CloeDee · 09/10/2019 13:56

I had spotting when i was 12 weeks and had really bad stomach pains as well, i turned up to the early pregnancy assessment unit at the hospital and got taken for a scan, everything in the scan was fine and the midwife couldn't really explain what it was. she did advise me though i was A negative blood and would have to get an antibody injection because i had been bleeding. Even though everything was ok i was glad i went and got checked as i had no idea i had to get a injection if i was bleading. I don't really know the answer to your question, but i would try to remain positive, if your really anxious you can book a private scan, where i stay they do scans that can be booked on the same day, hope everything goes well x

LucyDev18 · 09/10/2019 16:06

@RachaelMD02 ah love its so hard to decide what to do, we had decided not to try for a while, then i found out i was expecting 2 months after the mmc after only 1 period, couldnt get over it i was so shocked. All seems ok thank u, i have had a few more bleeds since but they think they have figured it out they have found a sub chronic hematoma so they think thats where its coming from, but not 100%. U just look after you and do what ever makes u and ur partner happy if u dont feel ready wait, but if u do thats up to u, my dear. I hope u feel better soon, its so hard to make any sense of it all

RachaelMD02 · 09/10/2019 19:09

@LucyDev18 it's so hard knowing what to do. I told my partner I needed a break after that last one I just felt emotionally and physically drained. That's brilliant news I'm so glad everything's going well. Did they say the subchorionic hematoma will heal itself? I'm glad you've finally found an explanation for the bleeding there's nothing worse than not knowing and the worry. I'm curious to see what the outcome of the tests would be though 3 months seems such a long time to wait. It won't be long going in though hopefully I get some answers xO

LucyDev18 · 09/10/2019 19:27

@RachaelMD02 i was so upset and fed up after the last one all i could think was i wanted to try again until oh talked me in to waiting an getting my head back to normal first thats why i got such a shock when i found out. They don't know they said in could come back or go away they cant twll as every one us different and they think it came back b4 after the first bad bleed i had, but I'll just have to wait and see. 3 months is not too long if it means u can get some answers, it could just b nothing though as i have a friend who had 4 mc and my sil had 2 b4 they had babies but they never found a problem on either of them, they just said it was one of those things. I did some acupuncture after the mmc to start up my af and all again, it is meant to be great for fertility if you can find the right person to do it, i was lucky therw was a lady only a few miles away from where i live that does it, which is unusual for where i live ad theres normally nothing in this little town.
