So I am freaking out a bit about my lack of self control. I was vegan for two years before getting pregnant in June and I never craved cheese or animal products until now. I am 12 weeks pregnant. I had awful nausea and vomiting for many weeks early in pregnancy but since last week my appetite is back and I've been craving and eating cheese! I don't even feel guilty even though normally eating animal products would horrify me. I've eaten either pizza or cheese on toast every day for the last 4 days. I feel quite disgusted with myself but am trying to tell myself it's just a temporary pregnancy thing! I'm not overweight (BMI 18).

As a former vegetarian who ate steak And burgers through pregnancy I say don't worry!! Your body is telling you the quickest way to get what it needs at the moment.

Trust your body.

I'm vegetarian and have found myself contemplating salmon and chicken over the last couple of weeks. I think it's because I've been so ill my body is craving protein. I'm currently living off crackers and rich tea biscuits due to crippling nausea 🤢

Why be disgusted? Eating cheese is perfectly normal for the majority of the population 🤷🏻‍♀️ Your hardly doing something outrageous

Your body needs this cheese for whatever reason, or your body wouldn’t be screaming for it. Your body is growing a baby just give it what it wants....

RushianDisney · 04/09/2019 12:55

Your body is telling you what it needs, don't feel guilty. It isn't some abhorrent crime to eat animal products.

Gottobefree · 04/09/2019 12:59

Trust your body. Imagine you aren't eating for just yourself... you're eating for the baby. You can go back vegan if the cavings go.

brightside11 · 04/09/2019 13:07

Thank you all for the perspective! I think I'll give myself a break and try not to feel so guilty about the cheese!

@janey15 Sorry to hear you're struggling. The nausea is awful isn't it. I'm still getting it on and off and I have so many aversions to food I normally like, it's ridiculous!

Thanks! My DH just suggested I try to force myself to keep eating even when it makes me gag - er no, it's just not possible! It's just so worrying reading that you need a healthy diet when everything I can eat is yellow...
It's good to hear yours is improving - fingers crossed it continues x

When I was very sick and pregnant with DS1, all I could eat for months was Pizza Hut deep pan pizza. No other pizza would do. I think it was my body needing the salt. Go with it for now. You can go back when your levels of whatever your body currently needs are settled.

Unstoppables · 04/09/2019 15:08

Before getting pregnant with DS, I had been dutifully vegetarian for 2 years. I'd been so glad I'd stuck to it. Week 8 of being pregnant and I was living off chicken nuggets and ham in macaroni cheese. He's now 8 months old and I'm still eating meat. Blush Just have what your body craves, it's normal and healthy when you're carrying a whole tiny person.

I wouldn't worry about it. Carry on as you are and see how you feel after you have had your baby. There is nothing stopping you going back to a vegan diet later on.
