Burping 5 month old

Hey everyone,

Right now we are having trouble feeding my 5 month old she will be drinking her bottle content but as soon as we burp her she totally refuses the bottle and will not take it back everytime.
She isn't drinking alot she is 19lb and only drinking 20oz per day which we are seeing the doctor about again on Friday..

Looking for advice in the meantime on whether it would be OK to give her the full 7oz and burp her afterwards instead of half way through then at the end?!

Any help appreciated

It depends on your baby of course but it’s not a given that a 5 month old even needs burping- most don’t by about 6 months as their digestive system has matured. I would have thought that a mid-feed burp is probably unnecessary and can be skipped, especially as it sounds like it’s annoying her!

I hope you get some answers regarding the feeding when you see the doctor.

Ok I will try giving her the full bottle see how she goes it must really annoy her as she literally won't take it back afterwards

I am a first time mum and always search for answers online and couldn't find any on burping

Thanks for your reply 😊

My DS had a great wee phase exactly like this at the same age. We put it down to a combination of nosiness and teething.

Sure enough he was over it after a week or two. How long has she been having the 20oz a day?

It's been the past 2 months the doctors and health visitor are worried she isn't getting enough fluids we have tried a few things and nothing is working she just doesn't seem to want any of her bottles I need to force her to drink 😔.

Ah I see. That’s a bit longer then my DS did it for. I’d certainly try going the whole 7oz at once to see if it helps. I know when I stopped to burp DS he would always burp twice in a row, and the second brought reflux which I think put him off taking any more.

Hope you get on well with the doctor

Have you tried giving cooled boiled water if Dr is worried about her not getting enough fluids?

My Niece used to cry because she was thirsty rather than hungry, so would refuse a bottle of milk but happily drain a bottle of cooled boiled water :)

Yeah we have tried that aswell she won't drink that either just spits it back out..

Really worried today as she has only drank 6oz since midnight last night took her to the doctor and they said just keep trying her but she won't even let me get the bottle in her mouth 😔

My son is 4 months old and he will drink a full 6oz bottle without stopping to burp. Hope you find the help you need.

Maybe try a different bottle brand so the test is a different shape, faster flow teat or maybe put something sweet on the teat so she likes the taste of it (trying to think of a honey alternative!)
