I have come back from a scan to find out my baby is 28 weeks but is coming in at 26 weeks 3 days, I have been told she weighs 2.2lb and I’m a bit concerned, has anyone had this happen, I have midwife on Wednesday afternoon and however she measured at the correct size on Friday at the midwife so I’m confused as well.

Scans are more accurate than bump measurements

As long as your baby is growing on their curve they will be happy. My baby measured small at 20 weeks and I've had constant appointments and scans since (it feels like!).

However she is growing on her curve so they are happy. At 28+5 she also measured 2lb2 and they were v happy that she was growing and putting on weight. Next scan 32 weeks back with my consultant

Take no notice. I've never yet heard them get it right. So many people get told they have a small baby or a large baby. It never turns out to be true.

My scan (further along) told me she was big and already 7lbs something but she came out 2 weeks later at 6lbs 5

I was showing as 2 weeks below at my recent 36 week scan and was told to ignore the date and when the midwife plotted she said he was spot on as he was in my growth chart curve. Try not to worry but speak to your midwife when you see them

Try not to worry too much

Both of my pregnancies came up as small with bump measuring which meant I needed extra scans. The scans showed my babies were small but healthy.

Dd was born at 38+5 weighing 5lb 13oz and ds was born at 37+4 weighing 5lb 4oz

Both were born healthy, needed no additional care and came home when I was ready

Try not to worry too much! My baby was measuring small the whole pregnancy, they said to expect a small baby.. he was born weighing 8lbs 13oz!

starflake · 28/08/2019 19:38

I was induced on my due date as to my last DD being too small! Was getting weekly scans & bump measurements so they decided to induce to get her out asap. I gave birth to a 10lb 10oz baby, I kid you not, 3 days after my last scan still showing a small baby!

hormonesorDHbeingadick · 28/08/2019 19:45

You need 3 growth scan for them to accurately predict baby’s growth and birth weight. They may have just measured your baby before a growth spurt. It is also worth remembering that the scans have a 15% tolerance for inaccuracy so your baby may weigh 15% more than the scan suggests.

My baby was so small I was being monitored daily. He was born at 8lbs, is now 6ft 3 and at University.

Abster2009 · 28/08/2019 20:38

well I’m trying not to worry and let it get to me, I wasn’t to comfortable with the scan today as she was facing away today. I see the midwife soon so will speak with her... thanks for the replies

I was told yesterday at my 36 week growth scan than my boy is measuring 2 weeks behind. I will have another one in 2 weeks but they were not concerned they said he’s carried on growing as his own rate so they just want to monitor. Don’t panic - it’s so common and like many have said and I’ve been told - they do get it wrong! Xx

FrecklesFreckles · 28/08/2019 21:42

I got told by bump was measuring small 2 weeks before I was due. Had a growth scan 5 days before due date where they said baby was measuring very small and induced right away. Ended up having to have a c section and DS was in fact small when he came out. 5lbs exactly. We did have to stay in SCBU for a week but at home he soon caught up and was chunky by the time he was 4 months.

GaraMedouar · 28/08/2019 21:46

I was told my baby was small, nope 8 1/2 lbs. The baby was obviously rolled up like a tiny snail. I was quite looking forward to getting birth to a 6 lb baby. But no ....

josiewosiee · 28/08/2019 22:19

Yes I was told this, bought all tiny baby clothes to the hospital and he was 8 pound 9 ounces.

NCBabyBoy · 28/08/2019 22:25
  1. scans are often inaccurate
  2. someone's got to have a smaller baby, they can't all be average :) I had to keep telling myself this (or rather the opposite) wrt DS's big head, it kept being mentioned at every scan. They only stopped mithering me about it when the paediatrician measured my head and confirmed that it seemed to run in the family, as I'd said all alongGrin So it might also just be a family thing!
  3. you'll get extra care, which is generally a good thing
  4. it's normal to be concerned, but try not to worry too much Flowers
Oneforposy7 · 28/08/2019 22:39

I got told to expect a very big baby (over 6lb at 36 weeks). 5 weeks later she was 6lb 10oz. It's a guess at best and as PP said, I'm yet to heard of them getting it even close to right.

Abster2009 · 29/08/2019 08:28

My minds at a bit of an ease now, all I want is what everyone wants just a healthy baby and if she’s small she small but healthy. Thanks so much for your comments it seems it’s very common that this happens.

My baby was always small they weren't worried about him being small until his growth started slowing and he wasn't growing, then they induced me. They can be wrong about weights they estimated my boy at 6lb 9 he was born at 5lb 6! Try not to worry I'm sure they will keep a close eye on baby! Xx

EmilyStar · 30/08/2019 02:24

DC3 was measured as small when I had a growth scan at around 28 weeks - he was between the 5th and 10th centiles IIRC.

The consultant said that some small babies are just naturally small and healthy, which is fine, but some are small because there’s problems (mainly with the placenta I think). And that it can be difficult to tell which category a particular small baby falls into.

So I had regular growth scans after that. The doctors were happy as long as the scans showed DC3 was growing along his centile line.

I was induced shortly after 37 weeks as the scan showed he’d stopped growing. His birth weight was very close to the weight estimated on the final growth scan.

xJune88 · 30/08/2019 05:24

I wouldn't worry unless there overly worried. I was told my baby was normal sized throughout my pregnancy despite my bump measuring 3 weeks ahead every time. Finally nagged a growth scan after chart didnt follow curve they said 6.8 she was born 8.6 they measure by head circumference and predict weight its not very accurate at all x
