I am 16+2 and have my midwife app tomorrow and have heard conflicting stories.. majority of women I have spoken to have said they heard the heartbeat at the appointment however I have also heard and read that they dont offer this now due to causing to much anxiety in women if they cant find it ?

Has anyone recently been to there appoitnemtb and were able to hear it or at least try to hear it ?

I went a couple of weeks ago and heard it :)

Babycakes1989 · 27/08/2019 20:24

I got asked at 16 weeks if I would like to hear it and she also said please don’t freak out if we don’t find it or it takes a whole! Baby is still relatively small! Completely optional xxx

Byorderofthepeakyblinders · 27/08/2019 20:26

I was also offered this at 16 weeks

EscapeTheOrdinary · 27/08/2019 20:27

I'm now 37 weeks and heard the heartbeat at 16weeks and each appointment since. she did listen using a plastic tube thing before using the Doppler and did say before it might be too early.

Sparkle0109 · 27/08/2019 20:28

Amazing! I really hope we get offered to possibly hear it!

For those who haven't said but were offered did you hear anything ?

Yes! I was incredibly anxious after a previous mmc but she found it after a few re positions! She was very patient and let me hear it for ages. Xx

Byorderofthepeakyblinders · 27/08/2019 20:35

Yes I did, can take a short while to find it though so dont panic if it's not heard straightaway and the midwife has to move it around a bit

Lollypop10 · 27/08/2019 20:45

The guidelines are to not listen to heartbeat at 16 weeks. However the midwife I saw explained this and said it was due to possibly causing stress if unable to hear the heartbeat or struggle to find it. I said I understood and wouldn’t freak out. Heard the heartbeat. Didn’t take long to find it. I have friends who have seen different midwives and they all said the same. I think it depends on how the midwife works. X

Flowersandrainbows2017 · 27/08/2019 20:53

I had to ask. She said they don’t routinely listen at 16 weeks anymore, but she’d have a go if I really wanted her to (I did!) but I wasn’t to panic if she couldn’t find it. Put the Doppler on, found it within about 2 seconds 👍🏼
So ask if not offered and hopefully you’ll hear yours too 🥰

coconutlatte44 · 27/08/2019 20:56

I wasn’t offered but I also didn’t ask, so don’t know if they would have done it if I had.

DiploCat1 · 27/08/2019 21:00

I think it depends on your NHS Trust but I heard mine at my 16 week appointment. Took a while to find though, apparently baby was hiding at the back!

MsSquiz · 27/08/2019 21:00

I was on holiday at 16 weeks so we made my appt for 17 weeks, as the midwife said she would try to find a heartbeat at that appt and didn't want to bring me in a week early in case we didn't hear anything and it had me worrying when away.

We heard it loud and clear when we went in at 17 weeks

ThePolishWombat · 27/08/2019 21:01

I heard it at the 16 week appointment with DCs 1&2, but with DC3 I was told they are trying to phase out listening in with Dopplers

YorkshireIndie · 27/08/2019 21:02

Was offered by the midwife if I wanted to hear it at 16wks but she stressed that if they can not find it then they will not send me for a scan. Was a lovely thing to hear

McHelenz · 27/08/2019 21:05

I had to ask and she wasn't keen but because I'd asked she had a go. It was really hard to find - baby kept kicking the doppler away and was back to back so we briefly heard it in the distance. Even though I didn't hear it properly I felt ok because the baby was moving so much.

MamaOfWobbles · 27/08/2019 21:10

I heard mine at 16 weeks, but like PP have said, the midwife said she would try but not to panic if she couldn't. I have a lovely recording on my phone of the heartbeat sound Smile

Starlight84 · 27/08/2019 23:12

After reading posts on here and seeing that more didn’t her get to hear it than those that did I went with the assumption I wouldn’t get to. I was shocked when the mw asked if i would like to check and did warn me it is tricky to find but would give it a go. She found it right away. I recorded it for my children to listen to it! Xx

glitterbomb13 · 28/08/2019 02:55

I'm in greater Glasgow and we were told they didn't listen in until 22 weeks x

Sparkle0109 · 28/08/2019 19:45

Thanks for the messages everyone. Had my app today and got to hear the heartbeat it was lovely 💕

Starlight84 · 28/08/2019 21:22

@Sparkle0109 that’s lovely news 😍 xx

mistermagpie · 28/08/2019 21:37

I've had two babies before (aged 4 and 2 so not that long ago) and they listened at the 26 weeks appointment. This time I wasn't allowed a listen until 22 weeks!

mistermagpie · 28/08/2019 21:37

16 not 26

Beck2277 · 29/08/2019 13:24

I've just been to my appointment and so relieved to hear the heartbeat! 146/148 so nice and normal:) feel like I can relax a little now!

VapeVamp12 · 29/08/2019 13:28

I got asked at my 16 week appt and I got to hear it, as PP said though she did say it could take a couple of minutes or not be able to hear at all.
