How did you tell work?

I work at a primary school which I have worked at for about 10 months and as we've had summer holidays I haven't told them yet. I have emailed the head asking if they have time this week or just before we go back (next week) so I can tell her (the email didn't mention why I would like to see her).

I was wondering if anyone has any advice on what to say? Or what I need to think about before? I'd like to work as long as I can as I really like the job but this is my first pregnancy so have no idea! I'm a TA, not a teacher.

Will be really grateful for any advice 😊

I work in a school too and just intend to to grab the Head for a couple of mins on the first day back as well as drip into HR. I know there's a template letter on the union websites -HR will probably let you know what to put in writing but it's usually your due date and when you intend to start mat leave (obvs subject to change) X

Congratulations on your pregnancy!
I don't work for a school, so your experience may be different to mine. But when I first told work, they didn't ask too many questions but we're interested in what I was hoping to do and were very happy for me. After I got my Mat B1 at 20 weeks had a sit down and more serious discussion.
Just remember you don't have to tell them until you're 15 weeks, so it's very courteous of you to tell them sooner to give them greater time to prepare.
Good luck!!

Congratulations! I am a teacher in a primary school and I'm just going to grab my head on the first inset. It's very early for me (8 weeks) but I'd rather just make him aware of what's happening.

I think all heads will be pleased for you, after all of people don't have children we won't have classes full of children!

Thanks everyone for your replies! Very encouraging 😊 I'm a bit nervous, partly because I was only going to be there until April but they've ended up keeping me for a year contract which I'll only be doing about half of! I've been flexible for them though so hopefully it will be fine.

@Sarwald you panicked me for a second! 😄 I'm 15+3 but double checked and it's 15 weeks before due date (I know I knew that! 😄) it's good to hear from a few who work at schools too! I've been nervous to tell everyone so I'm probably just overthinking it 😊

My plan is just to talk to the head and then I'll see what she says I need to do, but I know my die date and will have an idea of when I want to start mat leave. But it's good to know what I might need to do. Thank you!

Still grateful for other experiences 👍

I emailed to ask if I could meet this week (before the craziness starts) she emailed back today and I will be meeting her tomorrow morning. Really hope it goes well! Thanks again for all replies 😊

I shouldn't worry about the timing with your contract too much. These things happen. I know two people who both found out they were pregnant shortly after accepting a new job and they were both treated well.

I'm a primary teacher and am hopefully just going to talk to the head on the first day back as long as all goes well with my viability scan the day before. Unfortunately it will be her first day which isn't ideal...

I would prefer to leave it longer but I've felt terribly sick for over a week now and I'm a bit worried about how I'm going to cope. I will then tell my class ta and a close friend. Everyone else can wait until I start to show.

Just hoping the viability scan goes well or I'll be having an entirely different conversation Confused

I work in a preschool. I was very lucky that my booking appointment fell in may half term but I knew my dating scan wouldn’t. So I just wrote my boss and manager the same letter outlining my pregnancy basically and asking that it was important it remained completely confidential (all girls in a nursery/preschool and gossip can be rife!!) I am 21 weeks this week and I have only just told people I’m expecting! I don’t think people believe me as I’m not showing very much! Xx

lovesT · 27/08/2019 08:19

@janey15 thanks for your reply, I'm sure it will end up being okay, I'm probably overthinking a lot! Good luck for your scan and I hope you start to feel much better soon. I felt a lot better after 12 weeks and now almost feel myself again.

@Starlight84 I'm with you on the gossipy women! I'm the youngest at my school by quite a bit and already feel a bit of judgement at times 😏 so I'll just make sure the head knows and then tell people as it feels right 😊 I've got a tiny bump but I can still cover it up if people don't know! Also school is linked to other people I know who might find out so people will just gradually start to know but that's fine once the head knows.

Good luck to all of you who will be telling work soon! We've told our closest family and some friends but after today I'm looking forward to telling people that I want to without worrying about telling work first. Congratulations on all of your pregnancies too 😊

Yes @lovesT my issue was one of our other settings is within my eldest daughters high school and I was scared she would hear via gossip and people talking which would have been awful. I also hadn’t told family at the time as I felt they should know before others. It’s an awkward time of pregnancy I think. X

lovesT · 27/08/2019 09:05

@Starlight84 yes I've been cautious about who we tell just because I didn't want it getting to school before I told them, but I'm looking forward to having that worry lifted and just enjoying being pregnant and telling people! You must have had both scans now? I've got my 16 week appointment today (where I'm hoping I'll hear the heartbeat!) and 20 week scan next month 😊 it's an exciting time

@lovesT yes I had my 20 week scan last week. All seems well in there. They also said boy which kind of confirmed my gender scan at 16+6 weeks!
I heard my little ones heartbeat at 16 weeks appointment but I know some areas don’t. Hopefully you get to. I went expecting not to after I posted on here and majority saying they didn’t so I was pleasantly surprised! She found it right away. Yet when I went last week at 20 weeks (paranoid and needed peace of mind) it took her absolutely ages! Cheeky boy!

Exciting times ahead xx

lovesT · 27/08/2019 10:37

@Starlight84 that's so lovely you got to hear the heartbeat! I feel like this is a strange time because there's a big gap between the 12 week and 20 week scan so you can help but wonder if everything is okay!

I've been in this morning to tell the head and she was amazing, even hugged me! Feeling way better about it all now and looking forward to seeing the midwife later 😊

Aww thanks amazing @lovesT what a relief for you! Yes I thought that after my scan that I won’t see anyone now for 6 weeks! It’s bizarre! I’m starting to feel regular movement now though which is reassuring xx
