Sharp, abrupt lower abdominal pain

Hello all,

I'm only 5 weeks pregnant. But yesterday in the evening when I got up from sitting down I had a very sharp cramping pain in my lower abdomen left side which went away after a few minutes.

Just a few minutes ago in happened again. Really sharp in my lower this time right side stomach/abdomen.

I'm not sure whether this is just normal "uterus stretching" pain or I should actually call the EPU?

Call the EPU and let them decide if you need to be seen.

As a registered nurse working in an EPU I would always advise you to go to your nearest Urgent Care Centre and get checked out, to rule out an ectopic.

ok I'll do that x

Quick warning our epu aren't open at the weekend, so you may not get seen, it's all location specific. However try and rest up see how you feel if the pain gets worse I'd try nhs direct and see what they say.

Yes most EpUS are closed now (mine is open 9_5 weekdays only) that's why I recommend the UCC. I've been nursing 35 years .....it's better to be safe than sorry. They may do a 'fast scan ' in A and E and check your OBS..any tachycardia/hypotension. Yep you may have to wait.

You can take Paracetamol and see if it helps, but if the pain wakes you up at night , get to A and E.

samsoph · 24/08/2019 19:24

In our area , we have an UCC that then feeds into A and E.

@Victoriart Hey, I went to the early pregnancy unit and they gave me an internal scan. Me being just 5 weeks they didn't see much as expected but they wanted to make sure it wasn't ectopic. Saw the little yolk sac in the right place, so in 2 weeks they want to do another scan to make sure they see a heartbeat.

I'd say if your symptoms are bothering you definitely get it checked out. Better safe than sorry. However, I did have a water infection so got given antibiotics for that.
