Cod Liver Oil in Week 4

I read online that Cod Liver Oil was good to take during pregnancy...and then after having taken it every day during week 4, I found numerous sites which say that it can cause birth defects and harm your baby.

I've now stopped taking it, but I'm in bits thinking that I may have harmed the baby and have no-one to talk to about it at this early stage - NHS told me to google advise and wait until my first appointment at 8 weeks.

Has anyone else made this mistake? Does anyone now if there is something I can do to correct it? What are the chances that I've done something terrible to my baby?

Took them all the way through with my second as didn't realise this information. Son is bright as a button. Try not to worry. X

@snowflakeeel thank you so much for your message, I'm so relieved to hear this. I'm so glad I posted!

You're welcome. Enjoy your pregnancy X

I took it too. It's recommended in other countries. Wouldn't say I took it every day... maybe 3 times a week when I remembered!

Just had a healthy baby girl 4 days ago. The militant stance on vitamin A isn't well supported by the evidence in my opinion. In other European countries women are actively encouraged to eat liver on pregnancy.

Don't worry and have a good pregnancy! (Also "Real Food for Pregnancy" by Lily Nichols and "Expecting Better" by Emily Oster are good reads for this stage)

@1Bobbinwinder thanks so much. It's so good to hear from you and snowflakeeel, I'm feeling much more relaxed now! Thanks for the book recommendations, I'll get those ordered up today.

I believe they recommend omega 3 supplements for pregnancy but not cod liver oil due to high levels of vitamin A. I know pregnacare has a product that comes with omega 3.

I took 1 capsule a day through my pregnancy with ds and I had quite a few colds with him and took more than one a day during the colds to help fight them. My ds1 is now 2 years old happy and healthy.
