Subway - okay or not?

I know the advice is to avoid deli meats and Subway say chicken, meatballs, steak etc for pregnant women but I am so craving an Italian BMT Blush

I've seen some people say it's fine, it's all frozen but just read that the deli meats arrive fresh, not frozen.

Do you/did you/would you eat it when pregnant?

Op hope you don't mind me asking this on your thread but what's the deal with steak? One of my favourite foods but no way can I eat it well done.

Knickersononeshead · 21/08/2019 15:27

This time round (baby #4) I've not even looking at the 'to avoid' list. 🤔

tisonlymeagain · 21/08/2019 15:44

@CupCupGoose I think the advice is not pink, but if it's not pink there doesn't seem much point eating it.

It's fine enjoy

Tweetingmagpie · 21/08/2019 20:16

I had steak last night and had it medium rare like I always do, this is baby number 7 for me and apart from the obvious like smoking, alcohol and drugs I haven’t avoided anything! (It’s not like I get time for any of those these days anyway Grin)

You can't have a subway meatba sub or steak? I've never read that. I have subway chicken salads and it never crossed my mind it was banned

tisonlymeagain · 22/08/2019 10:38

Yeah the chicken or steak is the 'safest' thing to have, it's the salami and pepperoni that they advise to be cautious with @ballsdeep

I asked and they confirmed the salamis etc come in frozen. If frozen for 4 days it's safe. I think that also works for steak if you want to have it less than well done.

Most of this advice is based on marginal evidence at best, and changes frequently.

Given I spent a decent amount of time during my training seeing plenty of chain-smoking, binge-drinking, drug-taking mothers with surprisingly healthy babies I think the perception of risk is somewhat overestimated by most people.

If most people get away with all of the above, most of the daily risks that average people worry about are very low risk indeed.

quitefranklyivehadenough · 22/08/2019 20:00

@Pineappleofmyeye as I said up thread-FREEZING DOES NOT KILL BACTERIA!!!

Spam88 · 22/08/2019 20:49

The concern is about toxoplasmosis, which isn't bacteria.

Pineappleofmyeye · 23/08/2019 10:19

@quitefranklyivehadenough I don't think I mentioned bacteria. The worry is a parasite and the NHS says that freezing for 4 days makes cured meats safer. As linked above and quoted by a pp.
