How INACCURATE/ACCURATE were your birth weight predictions from growth scan?

I had a 32 week scan on Wednesday which showed my baby is above the 50th centile for head circumference and tummy circumference. My baby wasn't cooperating with her legs! At this stage they haven't given me a birth weight prediction because she is breech and they will scan again at 36 weeks.

However...... with DS2 I had a 32 week scan and his predicted weight was

8lb

when he was born, he actually weighed

10lb 4oz

!!

Would be VERY interested in getting some info from others to compare!

PS DS1 was 10lb 10oz. How likely is it that DD will be a whopper too?

ds was to be between 8.5lbs and 9lbs but almost certainly no bigger. He was 10lbs 10oz.

I've often heard people say their 3rd was smaller than the others so your dd may not be huge but you certainly have a history of big babies so my prediction is that she'll be 10lbs

DaisyMOO · 05/08/2007 09:45

My last baby was predicted to be about 7 1/2lbs. He was actually 10lb 13oz!!

lemonaid · 05/08/2007 09:45

With DS they predicted 10lb 7oz, I think, and he was 10lb 5.5oz. So pretty close in his case.

Statistically girls tend to be a little smaller, but I'd still be expecting a sizeable baby in your case!

lulumama · 05/08/2007 10:02

DS was estimated to be 8 lbs, by paplpation, he was 7 lb 13....DD , I had growth scan at 35 weeks, she was 6 pounds, so told to expect around 8 lbs again, she was 7 lb 8

lizziemun · 05/08/2007 10:26

With dd i was told by the midwife that she should be average 7lb - 7 1/2lb but she was 9lb 4oz and a week early. mearsure to size/week all the way through.

This time a different midwife said agian that this one doesn't feel any bigger then average. When i said that i was told last time, she just i must hide big babies.

lizziemun · 05/08/2007 10:27

Should read

When i said that i was told last time, she just said i must hide big babies.

pipsqueeke · 05/08/2007 10:29

DS was predicted to be at least 8lb deffo not a 6lber was her words but 'average - ie 7.5 plus) but prob more 8

he was 7lb excatly.

Biglips · 05/08/2007 10:36

all the way thru my pg i was never told about the baby's weight but once i got to about 6-7m pg..i asked....and it was about 5.5lbs....all the way thru i had no water in my belly apart from the last 3 weeks before i gave birth (was 12 days late - induction), midwife had always had said "youre gonna have a big baby"!!... and DD was 9lb 1oz

KitsAndBits · 05/08/2007 10:46

My first son was 9lbs so they were concerned about the size od DS2 as I was having a homebirth,

they predicted him to be atleast 10lbs, from scans and fundal height,

he was 7lbs11oz

My3Girls · 05/08/2007 10:52

I was told DD would be aroun 7lbs 4oz. She actually weighed 8lbs 6.5oz.

lunavix · 05/08/2007 10:59

my friend was told hers would be 9/10 lb plus, he was 6lb 15

mine was meant to be tiny (5lb around) she was 8lb 2

proper rubbish

RGPargy · 05/08/2007 11:17

Does everyone have a growth scan? I had my 22 week scan and was told that that's it as far as scans go and they wouldn't be seeing me again.

eandh · 05/08/2007 11:19

dd1 (had scan at 36 weeks cause she was breech!) estimated 7-8lb she was 7lb10oz

dd2 was born at 38weeks but had scan at 37weeks due to bleed they estimated 7lb and she was 6lb13oz (they also said she had loads of hair and she had a mop of dark hair when she arrived)

So both of mine were accurate but both scans very close to arrival date

Flower3554 · 05/08/2007 11:32

I was kept in hospital for the last 5 weeks of my 3rd pregnancy due to weight loss, awful morning sickness from day one right through to birth.

I had many scans and each one said very small baby. I was constantly told the baby would be very small. I was once told that if that was all that was wrong with the baby I would be very lucky.

DD2 was born perfectly healthy weighing 6lb 6ozs. A scan the day before predicted approaching 3.5/4lbs

lemonaid · 05/08/2007 12:17

RGPargy -- you only tend to have a growth scan if they are concerned (based on fundal height or palpation) that the baby is unusually large or small.

RGPargy · 05/08/2007 12:20

Thanx lemonaid.

Hopeitwontbebig · 05/08/2007 13:51

RG, I was given growth scan with DS2 because DS1 was big, again with this pregnancy because DS2 was big!! I'll keep you posted what they say at 36 wk scan.

Another quick question, as I have a history of big babies (and obstetrician measure fundal height as 34cm at 32+3) how likely is it for DD to turn? She's currently breech and has been for ages, been getting odd kicks low down for well over a month.

Ds was predicted 4lb at term!! He was born at 35 weeks at 5lb 2oz

pucca · 05/08/2007 14:21

They were right with me, i had a scan at 30 weeks ish and they predicted he was 7lb 6oz then, he was born at 38 weeks weighing 9lb 6oz.

Girls do tend to be a bit smaller, my dd i was a week over and she was 8lb 13oz.

mawbroon · 05/08/2007 14:32

Around 38 weeks, they predicted that ds would be 7lbs at term. He was 7lbs 10oz at 39+1

BHANNAE · 05/08/2007 16:57

Was told that my ds was not growing on one scan and they got him out by section the next day after a doppler flow test showed him not getting nutrients.
They estimated 6lbs and he came out 4 weeks early to a very shocked theatre weighing 12lbs 8oz.No date miscalculation as he was a honeymoon baby lol
Needless to say I have taken every scan this time with a pinch of salt!

Hopeitwontbebig · 05/08/2007 16:58

OMG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

quickdrawmcgraw · 06/08/2007 08:50

BHANNAE!!! Good grief! I got chills reading the weight! Were you split it 2? What a specatularly incorrect guesstimate.

quickdrawmcgraw · 06/08/2007 08:57

sorry just read he was born by section so I guess yes, you were split in two. As my mum would say. 'Jaysus, he was half reared already!'

Hersetta · 06/08/2007 09:46

This is interesting as I had a growth scan at 32 weeks and at that time her estimated weight was 4lb 9oz and she was on the 72nd centile. By 36 weeks she was up to 7lb 8oz and on the 95th centile except fot her head and tummy which were way over the 100th centile and off the charts they gave me. Am booked in for a CS at 39 weeks as she is firmly breech so will be very interested to see how big she actually is.

Even though the consultant said the odds of her turning head down were now very slim due to her size I'm a bit worried that she will and she go past term and be at least a 10lber!
