Anyone else expecting twins?

I'm 8+2 with DCDA (non-identical) twins. I don't know whether to shout with joy or scream in fear. I might do both.

Anyone else in a similar boat?

Yes, me! A bit further on than you, 16 weeks with Di/di twins - doc says 70% probability they are non-identical. So we've had some time to adjust to the idea - I was absolutely speechless when we first found out though Shock I remember getting in the car after the scan and saying to DH, 'we're going to need a bigger car!'

We have a 2 year old DS already - will these be your first?

Algebraicyourleg · 17/08/2019 19:55

Me, I’m 13 weeks! Twins skip a generation in my family (twin aunts none my generation) so we have always had a family joke that I would be the one to “cop for them” and low and behold I have.

Super excited but nervous, mainly about how big I’m going to get...I’m only 5ft3!

Nice to know others are in the same boat.

MrsEG · 17/08/2019 20:01

Yes, me too! I’ll be 13 weeks tomorrow with DCDA twins. Like others have said it was quite a shock, especially as we had three losses before this pregnancy so to get two for one feels unreal! Was on quite a bit of medication in the first trimester to help us through, but weaned off that now and had a fantastic healthy 12 week scan this week. I’m also worrying about how big I’ll get given I already have a noticeable bump!

boodles101 · 17/08/2019 20:17

Yes. My DCDA are arriving on Monday by elcs! I was shocked when I found out at the scan and to be honest have found it very hard to get my head around the whole pregnancy.
@Algebraicyourleg I'm 5ft4 and I'm not particularly massive. Obviously I feel it but when people find out I'm having twins they comment that they wouldn't have guessed.
@lifesnotaspectatorsport I also have a 2year old so expecting life to be chaos!

Squiff70 · 17/08/2019 20:30

LOL @lifesnotaspectatorsport I know what you men about needing a bigger car and being in shock!

I don't have any surviving children - I lost twins (boy/girl) at 19 weeks in January and have flalen pregnant with twins again just a few months later. It's crazy! We've only told our parents so far but I don't think our friends and families will believe us!

Congratulations @Algebraicyourleg! We don't have any twins in our family. My granny (or my mum's granny, I've forgotten which) was a twin but nobody else has had twins on either side of the family. There are no twins in my DP's family either. Crazy, isn't it?

A bump at 13 weeks @MrsEG? That's amazing! So glad you've had a great 12 week scan. My next scan is on Monday which is just a reassurance scan really. I'll be 8+4.

@boodles101 oh WOW, just two days to go before you meet your little ones! That's not long at all - have you got everything ready for them? Have you decided on names? Two boys, two girls or one of each? Or a surprise? Sorry for the inquisition!

boodles101 · 17/08/2019 20:36

Congrats squiff70 I have no twins in our family at all so was a shock! Sorry to hear about your previous losses.
We also had to get the bigger car!! We are having boy/girl twins and yes names decided. I think we are all ready and have everything, as ready as you can be! Just on count down now. Got to keep myself occupied tomorrow!

MrsEG · 17/08/2019 20:51

@Squiff70 Oh wow, what are the chances of that?! So sorry to hear of your previous loss, are they keeping a good eye on you this time around? No twins in our family either, at all! Yes - I was on prednisolone up to 12 weeks so I thought some of it was steroid bloat but off that now and bump has remained, it now feels quite firm and tight. Sonographer even made a ‘Let’s have a look and check there’s definitely just two in there’ joke! My mum and sister both carried very big in pregnancy so I think it’s twins mixed with genetics!

Good luck on Monday @boodles101 I’m sure you’re as ready as you’ll ever be!!

Squiff70 · 17/08/2019 20:52

@boodles101 I'm so excited for you. Please keep in touch if/when you can, and if you want to!

Squiff70 · 17/08/2019 20:53

@MrsEG I have no idea what the chances are. I have a problem with my right ovary and both sets of twins were conceived when I had pain that side so maybe that's got something to do with it? Thank you for your kind words, however.

OP posts:
boodles101 · 17/08/2019 21:00

I'll definitely stay in touch squiff70
I've read that of you have non-id twins you have about a 1/12 chance of having them again. Sonographer also joked to us about looking for a third, my husband asked her to book in his vasectomy 😆.
How are you all feeling? Any sickness or other symptoms? I've been very lucky and had a smooth pregnancy up until the struggle of the last few weeks. And did any of you have a feeling about having twins?

Squiff70 · 17/08/2019 22:00

LOL @boodles101! When I found out I was having twins last October I had a massive panic attack and left the room saying 'I can't do this' and crying hysterically. I never did get my head round the fact that I was having two babies but I was devastated to lose them in January.

This time though, we went for a scan at 6+4 (an early scan because of my previous loss) and the sonographer zoomed in on 'the baby' and asked if we could see the heartbeat. Thankfully we could, but I just uttered the words 'is there only one?". I had a strong feeling there were two again. She said "it's very early days but I can only see one". I didn't believe her, and at that second she moved the probe and said "oh hang on, there's another one". I tried not to laugh or cry but I was shocked. I'm getting my head round it now.

I had bad nausea for two weeks but no vomiting. Now I only have mild nausea and can still only manage simple (mostly unhealthy) foods but I'm slowly improving and hopefully by the second trimester I'll be on a really healthy diet. How about you? How are you doing?

OP posts:
boodles101 · 18/08/2019 06:39

Wow it's funny how you just get that feeling. I had said to my DH a few times about the possibility of twins, no real reason why, just something in my head kept making me think it. I went for the 12 week scan and as soon as the probe touched my belly I saw both of them. Me and DH just laughed the whole way through!
I was really lucky, no sickness or nausea, no cravings. Just struggling a bit at the end due to the weight of them and the lack of sleep. It gets very uncomfortable with them both in there, hard to lay down in any kind of nice way!

MrsEG · 18/08/2019 08:44

@boodles101 @Squiff70 I have been quite lucky really too, have never been sick just some nausea, and went off all healthy food from 6-12 weeks but in the past week am getting my normal appetite back! Have been really very tired though.

I had had a dream about twins the day before our first early scan, I mentioned it to DH on the way and he said ‘Don’t even joke about that’ - an hour later there they were on the screen!! It’s taken some getting used to and a lot of plans (eg room for the nursery) have changed but now we’re just excited - they both looked great on the 12 week scan rolling and kicking away so it seems very ‘real’ for us both now.

Squiff70 · 18/08/2019 10:35

Mother's intuition @boodles101! Sometimes we just know... I'm glad you were able to laugh when you had your scan. Weren't you petrified as well?

Carying one baby to term, I can only imagine, is very hard work. Two must be totally and completely utterly exhausting. A close friend of mine has twin babies and I remember how unforforable she was at the end of her pregnancy! I feel for you, and have all this to come.

How are you feeling about tomorrow?

@MrsEG We sound very similar with the nausea (no vomiting) and going off healthy food! I have aso been very tired, particularly weeks 6&7. Not too bad now but I'm only 8+3 so expecting things to come back in time. So glad your 12 week scan went well. It's amazing to see them kicking away when you can't feel them yet. We're looking at moving house in the next few months but can't find anything suitable where we want to live. Problem is, we have a 'spare' room here we could use as a nursery but it has my house rabbits in! One is ancient (11) and wouldn't survive a Winter outside. The other is a bit younger but I don't think she would survive outside either - they've been in the house from being babies. So, we don't know what to do. We don't have a garage to put them in to keep them out of the cold and wind.

boodles101 · 18/08/2019 11:58

Oh yes definitely petrified too squiff70 I still am 😆. I'm not sure anything can actually prepare us for how hard it will be so I've tried not to worry about it really. I'm still waiting for my DH to freak out about it all but he's been so calm. It took me a year to persuade him to try for a 2nd child and we ended up with a 3rd too!
I'm feeling good about tomorrow, not nervous yet but sure I will be in the morning. It took me a while to decide whether to go for csection or natural but I'm really happy with my decision now. I think if I was being induced I would be panicking alot now!

doodlejump1980 · 18/08/2019 12:03

@boodles101 good luck tomorrow!
Twin mum here, my dcda boys are 4&1/2. Feel free to ask any questions :)

Squiff70 · 18/08/2019 12:04

Nothing can prepare us @boodles101! I'm glad you're at peace with your decision to have an elective c-section. I'm going to have to have a section at 36 weeks according to my consultants. That takes us to the very end of February and I'm praying I don't have them on the 29th, which is a leap year, lol!

boodles101 · 18/08/2019 12:15

Thanks doodlejump just looking forward to meeting them now!

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 18/08/2019 16:39

@Squiff70 So sorry to hear about your earlier loss, I can't imagine how tough that was. Hoping everything goes smoothly for your pregnancy this time x

@boodles101 OMG good luck for Monday! I mean, tomorrow! Eeek. 😮 I'm expecting to have a planned C-section too due to CS with my first baby. Never even considered doing it naturally though!

Squiff70 · 19/08/2019 13:53

@lifesnotaspectatorsport Thank you for your kind words. It was probably the hardest thing Ii've even gone through but sometimes we don't get a choice in these matters.

On a positive note, I've had a scan this morning and both blobs are growing well. They're measuring at 8+3 weeks but according to my LMP I'm 8+3. A day doesn't make much difference though!

@boodles101 I'm thinking of you today. Hope everything goes smoothly/is going smoothly and that you feel as well as you possibly can after your babies arrive. Flowers

Squiff70 · 19/08/2019 13:53

LMP = 8+4, sorry
