I am 12+5 today and I finally have my dating scan in 6 days time. This is my first baby so not had any experience with an abdominal scan before. I know you are supposed to go with a full bladder but maaaan I have terrible anxiety, especially as I know I will be getting bloods done too (I have a HUGE irrational phobia of needles lol), so I know I will need to keep going to the toilet due to the nerves. Do you think it will be a problem?? Has anyone else been like this with anxiety and not had any problems with their scan? Thank you ladies!

I went for an early scan at 7 weeks and was told to drink a pint and a half, an hour before the scan. However this was faaar to much. My bladder was so full we couldn't see a thing 🙈 I had to go and half empty my bladder before being scanned. The sonograoher said a glass of water is more than enough! Try not to wee after drinking the water as you really don't want to miss getting a good picture due to an empty bladder or have to prolong the nerves by having to go and drink more water then wait. Good luck!

Kam610 I see! So do you think it has to be a whole hour before, or do you think something like half an hour forehand would be ok maybe??

I was always told that the idea is that if you drink plenty of fluids within the 90 minutes before hand, then you will be perfectly OK to go to the toilet as your bladder will just refill due to the volume you've drunk. If you keep topping up then your bladder will keep filling up. If it's too full for your scan then they'll just tell you to empty your bladder.
Easier to empty than to fill.

The reason they ask you to have a full bladder as it makes for a clearer image for them to get the measurements and information required to ensure a healthy pregnancy/baby.
I find it extremely uncomfortable but it's so worth it rather than being told to sit back outside to fill your bladder if they're unable to get a clear image of baby/placenta etc.
If I were you I would really try to get ur bladder as full as possible, just think of the lovely clear image of baby you'll have after! I will attach my DD scan print at 12 weeks, and my current pregnant scan at 12 weeks and the difference in visibility was due to not having a full bladder first time around.

Congratulations and all the best x

I drank the amount recommended before my 12 week scan! She couldn't see a thing as my bladder was so full so I had to empty my bladder and she got a perfect view!!
At my 20 week I will just drink as I normally would during the day!
