Hi all,

37 weeks pregnant with twins. At my scan on Thursday twin 1 was head down but slightly off centre. Twin 2 head up in my ribs.

The sonographer recorded both as breech? I thought if a baby was head down that wasn’t breech... I asked the dr but he was a bit dismissive and said well it says here breech so that’s that sort of thing.

I’m confused. Please can anyone explain?

Cheers

I’m a midwife and I’m confused as well. Baby isn’t breech if head down. And at 37 weeks it makes a difference if you’re hoping for a vaginal birth. Have you got any more scans booked?

@VivaLeBeaver no the dr came in with a c section time and date in hand and we went along with this because we’ve always understood breech for baby 1 = c section but now we’ve had time to talk and reflect we’re really confused. I was thinking of calling on Monday and asking for another scan and consultation before anything else happens?

If you think you’d want a vaginal birth then definitely ring and ask. If you’d want a lscs regardless then just mention it to the dr at the time of the operation that you think baby 1 is cephalic.

We’d like to try if it’s an option yes. Thank you for responding 😊

I would ring antenatal clinic Monday morning and ask to speak to the clinic sister. Try and get a scan ASAP.

Well, the hospital have told me they’re too busy to see me this week. I explained why I’d like to be seen before Wednesday and she said they’d rescan me before the c section and then go from there so...

Thank you for your advice @VivaLeBeaver

Absolutely get a re-scam to clarify. They should be very clear with you about what position your babies are in and what that means for your chances of a successful vaginal birth. Simply stating that both babies are breech and booking you for a section is not good enough.

@TinyMystery the dr came in with a c section already booked for me, and I’m not sure he’d spoken to the sonographer, just read the notes to me. There wasn’t a discussion we were told we were having a c section this Wednesday.

The midwife I spoke to today was very nice but wasn’t for getting me a scan appointment and said that before the c section on Wednesday they’d rescan me and we could make a choice from there.

🤷‍♀️ Also slightly confused because I’ve had no letter or call to confirm the time of this c section which I raised with the midwife today. She said someone will call me but I’m supposed to be in for blood work tomorrow.

I feel a bit lost in all of it to be honest.

Well it's certainly standard practice on the morning of an elective section being done for breech to do a presentation scan on the Labour ward with a portable scanner before going to theatre.

But you are starved and in a gown and bloods done by then which seems a total waste of time if you don't need a section.

Maybe when you go in for bloods tomorrow decline bloods and say you won't consent until you've had presentation confirmed. It's supposed to be an informed choice and it doesn't sound very woman focused care at the minute.
