I am two days' late with my period - I came off the pill about six weeks ago and my periods are usually very regular.

Today I decided to take a pregnancy test so I bought the Clearblue generic test and got a strong vertical line and faint but clear horizontal line. The instructions imply this means I am pregnant (eep). Because the second line is quite faint I chugged a load of water and did the second test in the pack. Same result. Clearly a cross but the second line less visible. I'm freaking out now so I drink more water and go to Tesco to get another test. This time I buy the Clearblue test that can be used before your period, even though I'm two days late. This one comes up negative? So now I'm really confused! I also bought a cheapy one that's just the plastic strip and that came up negative. My boyfriend thinks I should wait a couple of days and try one of the digital ones with the word - does anyone else have any insight? (I'm also confused as to how they are both 99% accurate but showing different results!) Thank you!

Have you done all this in one afternoon?

Wait till tomorrow morning and take one.

plantsandyoga · 15/08/2019 16:26

Yep! I'm 35 and children is something I thought I'd missed the boat on so I'm getting myself far too excited 😂 Good advice to wait until tomorrow!

When I did a test, I got the same clearblue ones with a cross.

I had an extremely strong vertical line, very faint horizontal line and a very strong control line. Took me ages to figure out this meant I was pregnant and online searches told me this can be caused by high hcg levels.

Turned out to be twins, so that may be why.

I suspect if you’re drinking loads of water you’ve massively diluted your pee and need to wait until tomorrow. That first test sounds very positive though.

userabcname · 15/08/2019 16:28

If you're drinking lots of water your urine is probably too diluted. Usually you get the clearest results with fmu (first morning urine). Or if you do test later in the day then it's best to hold it as long as you can before doing the test. Good luck OP!

Celebelly · 15/08/2019 16:29

If you're drinking a ton of water your pee is just going to get more and more dilute. Test with first morning urine or a four-hour hold. And get a pink dye test - a First Response Early Result is the best.

SinkGirl · 15/08/2019 16:29

Just to point out the obvious (which I missed)

On the clearblue test, you get the horizontal line whether you’re pregnant or not pregnant.

The vertical line only appears if you’re pregnant. So if that line is strong, you’re definitely pregnant.

bessie84 · 15/08/2019 16:30

definately wait til morning. sounds like too much water.

eekk so excited for you. update us

MayFayner · 15/08/2019 16:33

this means I am pregnant (eep)

Congratulations! Smile

bessie84 · 15/08/2019 16:33

ps: buy first response early results tests. super sensitive. also collect wee in a cup so you don't have to drink water and wait for another wee for 2nd test, just dip it in same cup.

sounds positive to me. x

plantsandyoga · 15/08/2019 17:32

Thank you! I mucked this up - the line that's strong is the horizontal line and the vertical line is weaker. Oops! I got my horizontal and vertical confused 🙈

Thank you so much everyone - I did wonder if it was all the chugging that was doing it! I'm going to try one with my first morning wee tomorrow and keep my fingers crossed - of course will keep You all updated! Thank you 🥰

KWordy · 16/08/2019 08:50

Fingers are crossed for you 🤞

whattodowith · 16/08/2019 10:05

Faint positives are normal early in pregnancy. A positive is a positive where faint or strong, congratulations!

plantsandyoga · 17/08/2019 06:08

Just to give a quick update - I waited until my first morning wee this morning (it is 5am!), peed in a cup like someone above suggested and used a digital test and another Clearblue test. Both came up immediately positive!!!!! Thank you to everyone that suggested waiting till a morning wee, I obviously diluted it too much last time!!! So... what do I do now guys 😂😂😂😂 I'm so overwhelmed! I only stopped taking the pill last month and I've been on it since I was 15, I'm now 35. Wasn't expecting this.....

congratulations! we took a couple of days to digest the information and then I called my doctors surgery who told me the process for several to midwife. it's different in each area so you may have to see a doctor first. your first midwife appointment will be around 8 weeks Smile oh and if you aren't already start taking folic acid and vitamin d. both are recommended ok the nhs website

EscapeTheOrdinary · 17/08/2019 06:30

referral not several

bessie84 · 17/08/2019 08:30

MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS xxx

KWordy · 17/08/2019 08:40

Congratulations 🤰

BertieBotts · 17/08/2019 09:07

What to do now - start taking folic acid if you're not already :) boots sell it. Look up the NHS list of not advised foods and activities. Download a pregnancy tracking app for the fun of it. Maybe take a "bump photo" cause a before shot is nice to have.

Over the next couple of weeks phone your GP and ask for a midwife booking in appt, this usually won't happen until you're 10 weeks though.

Congratulations!

Starlight84 · 17/08/2019 21:37

Congratulations @plantsandyoga amazing news 😁 xx

Lizzy7979 · 06/12/2024 01:28

Does this look like a good positive for 5 weeks and 1 day . So scared of having a chemical I’m scrutinising the colour of every test I do . This was done in the evening as evening is the time where my urine is the most concentrated. Sometimes if I do one in the day it will be a bit fainter but this is the latest one x
