DD1 is Ella. DD2 due Wednesday, she'll be wanting a name. So, choices are between Bryony and Neve (DH wants Anna but have decided it's too similar to Ella so in the style of Ross and Rachel - VETO!!!).

Bryony or Neve?

TIA.

Neve

MrsBadger · 04/08/2007 07:48

Bryony, purely because my inner pedant says Neve should really be spelt Niamh...

totaleclipse · 04/08/2007 07:49

Bryony

tigerschick · 04/08/2007 08:02

Agree MrsB - Love Niamh but she'll forever be telling people how to pronounce it - Really don't like Neve.

So, if it's a choice of the original 2 then Bryony

BooWidger · 04/08/2007 08:20

It ideally would be spelt Niamh but don't want DD2 to spend her life spelling her name or correcting pronunciation. Was hoping that the alternative spelling had become widespread enough to be acceptable though have to agree it doesn't look as attractive. Does this mean that Niamh only really 'works' in Ireland? A great shame if so as it's such a pretty name.

Bryony

berolina · 04/08/2007 08:26

Bryony or Niamh (both very pretty names IMO), not Neve.

tigerschick · 04/08/2007 08:27

Well - there is Niamh Campbell, who was in Party of 5 and Scream 1-73 - so maybe she won't have the same problems as a few years back?
If you like it then go for it; my name is fairly common but it's one that can be spelt in 2 ways and normally people opt for the other one - you get used to it.

berolina · 04/08/2007 08:29

(and with Bryony you'll have people spelling it Briony - potentially also annoying, IME as the owner of a name that can be varied and spelt in millions of ways )

Twiglett · 04/08/2007 08:31

agree with majority of comments Bryony or Niamh

I prefer Niamh as Bryony is rather a clumsy name IMHO and difficult to pronounce particularly for small children, also what would your short-form be (there will most probably be a short form .. Rony? Bry? .. do you like those?)

BandofMothers · 04/08/2007 08:38

Neve is also a name, pronounced NEV.
As in Neve Campbell, the actress.

BandofMothers · 04/08/2007 08:39

Someone has mentioned her, but her name is Neve not Niamh.

MrsBadger · 04/08/2007 08:41

(surely it's pronounced 'Neev' not 'Nev'?)

BooWidger · 04/08/2007 09:02

Names don't tend to get shortened within our family but inevitably are by others. Would probably go for Bree which I think is quite nice (not at all cheesy ). Think Neve Campbell is pronounced the same as Niamh.

I heard an interview with some of the other cast members from something she was in and they appeared to be pronouncing it NEV. I thought it was neev too, but apparently not.

Miaou · 04/08/2007 09:07

I like them both, but if you are going to have Neve please spell it Niamh

BooWidger · 04/08/2007 09:15

Ahh, just Googled and you're right - definitely NEV. Not very attractive...! Well, think that makes decision a little easier as much as I love the name I just don't think it would work for us spelt the correct (and very lovely) way! Unless we move to Ireland.....

BandofMothers · 04/08/2007 09:19

Wierd isn't it

It's quite a popular name now, so don't think people would pronounce it wrong, if that's what you're worried about.

BandofMothers · 04/08/2007 09:27

BTW I considered Niamh for DD2, but didn't use it as it seems to be in demand at the mo, at least here it is.
But like it the best of your 2.

BooWidger · 04/08/2007 09:28

Don't think i'd get DH to agree to the proper spelling TBH, he's already had his nose put out of joint because i've 'suggested' his first choice be used as a middle name I'd love to think that we could wait until baby is here (soon please!) and take one look at her and say "Ahh, well, she's obviously a xyz!" but I have trouble believing that this happens in real life!

OP posts:
BandofMothers · 04/08/2007 09:30

We nearly resorted to that with DD2. And she was 2 weeks late. Just couldn't decide.
We'd have been in trouble if she'd arrived on time
I suggested waiting til she was born to decide.

BooWidger · 04/08/2007 09:48

I find thinking up names a real problem. DD1 was Molly from before I was pregnant (!) all the way up until 2 days before she was born. Then I had a panic as I realised i'd completely gone off the name! Ella was picked from a baby name book at the last minute. Think i'm in the minority but I find boys names easier.

Neve campbell IS pronouced "NEV"

missbumpy · 04/08/2007 20:23

I love Niamh. Not convinced by the Neve spelling though. It's true she'll have to explain how to spell it a few times in her life but I reckon she'll thank you for a beautiful, unusual name one day!
