DD1 is Ella. DD2 due Wednesday, she'll be wanting a name. So, choices are between Bryony and Neve (DH wants Anna but have decided it's too similar to Ella so in the style of Ross and Rachel - VETO!!!).

Bryony or Neve?

TIA.

Niamh preferable to Bryony.

However you spell it, she will always have to spell either name for people, neither are very common in the uk, I think.

On the plus side, anyone with a drop of Irish in them can spell Niamh.

Bryony too close to Brian, imo.

KristinaM · 05/08/2007 15:16

" but there are 93 zillion Amys, Alices, Olivias and Graces (all nice names, though) whereas Bryony would be the only one"

I have kids in college, school and nursery and the only Alice i know is over 80. And I only know one Grace, who is in her 20s.So i guess it depends on where you live

i agree with commenst about Neve - go for Niamh

Do one syllable or 3 syllable names go better with your surname? If Ella works for you, you may need another 2 syllable name

BooWidger · 05/08/2007 15:18

That was the main problem with DHs choice of Anna - Ella and Anna not easy to say together!!

OP posts:
BooWidger · 05/08/2007 15:21

It's a 2 syllable surname, tbh anything seems to go with it!

we have an anna and considered ella or eleanor in subsequent pg but ruled it out for the same reasons. just as well as they were boys

now my sister has an ellie

claraq · 06/08/2007 09:17

Tutter - my name is Clara, but I have had problems all my life with people pronouncing it wrong. I say it like Claire with an a at the end; people generally think it is pronounced to rhyme with Tara. So BLAh it's not a good choice!

MrsBadger · 06/08/2007 09:53

I always thought Clara did rhyme with Tara...

How about Lucy? I do like Rhiannon though.

claraq · 06/08/2007 09:55

MrsB - it can be either but that is my problem everyone assumes it rhymes with Tara and not sarah. Personally I prefer my way but I don't think it is as common.

SweetyDarling · 06/08/2007 15:18

All the Clara's I know rhyme with Tara. It's v high on my list of gir's names, but will have to shell the little boy I'm lugging about before we get around to number 2!

Peachy · 06/08/2007 16:47

me too lots of clara's known but all to rhyme with tara

surely it would be claira otherwise????

claraq · 06/08/2007 16:53

No it's CLARA pronounced to rhyme with Sarah. I do know how to pronounce my own name!!!! .

Sorry. This has been an issue all of my life. Not sure why people can't get their head round it. Even when I introduce myself they still get it wrong

Peachy · 06/08/2007 16:58

No thats fair enough, just what I mean was thats an unusual pronumciation of clara- as a rule it IS pronounced the other way.

SweetyDarling · 08/08/2007 11:54

Oh Clara, sorry! Din't mean to offend. But tbh, if I saw your name and hearr yousay it I would simply assume your pronunciation was an accent thing rather than a totally different way of saying the name, so I would prob still say it the Tara way until corrected.
I know it must be annoying, but surely you understand that your pronunciation of your name is v unusual (although v nice I must say).

SweetyDarling · 08/08/2007 11:55

Ooh - sorry about the typing!

iwouldgoouttonight · 08/08/2007 12:10

My great grandma was called Clara pronounced to rhyme with Sarah too. I think its a lovely name and would use it but for some reason I'm convinced if I have another baby it will be another boy!

Sorry in reply to the original post I prefer Briony/Bryony too.

claraq · 08/08/2007 14:16

Sweetydarling - that's ok, not offended! Just get frustrated as you can probably tell...
Iwouldgoouttonight - glad someone else out there has heard of the name spelt my way.
PS I would go out tonight too if only.....

claraq · 08/08/2007 14:16

PPS Sorry for highjacking this post!

nappyaddict · 11/08/2007 12:19

neve.

MintChocChippyMinton · 11/08/2007 12:22

Niamh (it's popular enough for people to know the pronunciation i would've thought - there's two at DC's nursery). Very nice.

McEdam · 11/08/2007 12:29

Niamh. Spelt correctly.

Riss70 · 11/08/2007 12:30

The actress Neve is pronounced Neev and that sounds kinda partial I think (like the whole word hasn't come out of something)

Bryony is quite nice and so is Niamh - check them outwith your surname and the middle name and see what you come up with.

We liked Beth but our last name stats with O so - BO - definitely not a good look for initals for a little girl especially once they get to school and encounter the nasties of the class!

Whatever you call her remember you both have to live with it - I gave in when DD was born and let H pick her name and there are still days when I am really pissed off about it because I don't actually like it that much! (Chloe)

nappyaddict · 11/08/2007 12:52

do you like neva?

if you don't like the spelling niamh what about nieve? that's the spanish version of it.

belgo · 11/08/2007 13:05

Bryony. Really dislike the spelling Neve.

bletherer · 11/08/2007 19:30

Hi

Niamh is a lovely Irish name, but it is getting very popular. Why not try something different.

There are tons of other Irish girls names to pick from - my DD is called Aine (prounounced Awnya) and my friend has a Aoife (pronounced Effa). We are both Irish though!

Go to this website to see (and hear) more Irish names.
